Al-Khuraiji discusses the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis with the Swiss envoy
His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Engineer Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji, received today at the Ministry’s headquarters in Riyadh, the Special Envoy of Switzerland to Sudan and African Affairs, Sylvain Esther, in the presence of the Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to the Kingdom, Yasmine Chatila.
Details of the Saudi-Swiss talks
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the sisterly Republic of Sudan, reviewing the field and political developments and the efforts being made at the regional and international levels to de-escalate the situation and end the ongoing conflict. They also discussed a number of issues of common interest and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the Kingdom and Switzerland on matters related to the African continent.
Saudi Arabia's role in resolving the Sudanese crisis
This meeting comes within the framework of the ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since the outbreak of the crisis in Sudan in mid-April 2023. Riyadh is playing a pivotal role through the “Jeddah Platform”, in partnership with the United States of America, in an attempt to bring the Sudanese parties together at the negotiating table, with the aim of reaching a permanent ceasefire that paves the way for a comprehensive political process.
The Kingdom always emphasizes its firm position calling for the preservation of Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, and the need to prioritize dialogue to stop the bloodshed, in addition to its great humanitarian efforts through the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid to provide assistance to those affected by the war.
The importance of international coordination and the repercussions of the crisis
Coordination with Switzerland is of particular importance given Switzerland's experience in international mediation and humanitarian work. International concerns are growing over the ongoing Sudanese crisis and its direct impact on the stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, as well as the catastrophic humanitarian consequences that have led to the displacement of millions both within and outside Sudan.
The international community, through intensifying meetings with key players such as Saudi Arabia, seeks to find effective mechanisms to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas and the protection of civilians, which was at the heart of Engineer Al-Khuraiji’s talks with the Swiss envoy.
