Stabilizing supply chains in Saudi Arabia through sustainable transport alternatives

The Saudi Public Transport Authority has announced the activation of a comprehensive logistics system across the Kingdom's various ports of entry, supported by more than 3,000 companies and alternative shipping lines. This strategic move aims to ensure the continuous flow of goods and protect supply chains from any potential disruptions that could affect the local or regional market. The Authority explained that the "Licensed Operators Directory" now includes thousands of companies accredited in the freight transport sector, contributing to increased reliability and transparency, and facilitating efficient access for beneficiaries to service providers.

Historical development of the transport and logistics sector

Historically, Saudi Arabia has recognized the paramount importance of a robust transportation infrastructure, investing billions of dollars over the past decades in developing seaports, airports, and road and rail networks. This strategic approach culminated in the launch of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy within Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to solidify the Kingdom's position as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. The development of this system was not a sudden event, but rather the result of ongoing planning to address the economic and geopolitical challenges that have long impacted global trade.

The economic impact of ensuring the stability of supply chains

This event is of paramount importance on multiple levels. Locally, it ensures stable commodity prices and uninterrupted availability for consumers, thus bolstering food and medicine security. Regionally, it underscores the Kingdom's role as a safety net for trade in the Middle East, particularly during times of crisis. Internationally, providing reliable logistical alternatives enhances the confidence of global investors and trading partners in the Saudi economy, contributing to attracting more foreign direct investment and facilitating the smooth flow of international trade.

Digital transformation and ease of contracting

In a related context, the Authority indicated that the “Logistics” digital platform now allows users to clearly define cargo types. This technological advancement enhances contracting efficiency and accelerates logistics operations both locally and regionally. The Authority also confirmed the availability of sufficient capacity for the land transport fleet between Red Sea ports and various regions to ensure the efficient delivery of shipments to the end user. It further stated that it is monitoring the status of affected shipments in real time, in coordination with relevant authorities, to prevent any disruptions and provide direct communication channels for addressing emergencies.

Expediting customs clearance and air freight procedures

On the customs front, the relevant authorities announced the full automation of import and export processes through the “Fasah” platform, expediting release procedures and prepayment before shipments arrive. They added that transit services within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have been activated, with food and pharmaceutical shipments given top priority under the “Clearance within Two Hours” initiative. For its part, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) noted the complete stability of air cargo facilities, with expedited permits for charter flights and the provision of additional slots to accommodate anticipated increases in demand.

Strategic alternatives and safe maritime routes

The relevant authorities discussed activating strategic alternatives, including rescheduling flights and using Saudi airports as alternative hubs to enhance operational flexibility in the face of global challenges. They revealed the readiness of Red Sea ports with a massive capacity exceeding 60 maritime services per week. The ports also adopted alternative shipping routes via the Cape of Good Hope to reach the west coast, ensuring the flow of goods through Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdullah Port, and Yanbu Commercial Port. They confirmed the readiness of the Saudi Railway (SAR) to transport goods at high capacity to the capital, the Eastern Province, and the north, with fixed rail fares to reduce pressure on trucks and provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly option.
