Guterres calls for adherence to the terms of the truce in the Middle East

Amid escalating tensions, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued an urgent appeal to all parties involved to adhere to the terms of the ceasefire in the Middle East. Guterres stressed the need for strict compliance with obligations under international law, emphasizing that an immediate ceasefire is a crucial step towards paving the way for a lasting and comprehensive peace that will end the cycle of violence in the region.
International and UN welcome for the ceasefire announcement in the Middle East
Guterres particularly welcomed the joint statement issued by the United States and Iran, calling for a two-week ceasefire. Similarly, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed his deep hope that this statement would alleviate the severe suffering endured by civilians. Türk noted that these civilians had lived through weeks of terror and destruction and remained at grave risk to their lives and futures. The UN urged all parties to act in good faith and ensure that this initial step translates into a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement.
The historical roots of the tensions and ongoing efforts to de-escalate them
These developments unfold within a complex historical context marked by decades of geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, which have cast a shadow over the stability of the entire region. Since the late 1970s, relations between the two countries have been marked by sharp fluctuations, punctuated by economic sanctions, nuclear negotiations, and indirect military engagements in several regional arenas. These accumulated conflicts have created a state of persistent instability, making any initiative for de-escalation a crucial step. Current diplomatic efforts reflect a growing international recognition that military solutions are no longer viable and that direct or indirect dialogue is the only way to resolve the intertwined crises that have plagued the region for decades.
Regional and international implications for the stability of the region
This diplomatic development holds significant strategic importance, with repercussions extending beyond local borders to encompass the regional and international arenas. Regionally, Saudi Arabia welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif regarding a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran. The Kingdom commended the fruitful efforts of Pakistan, under the leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of the Defence Force and Chief of Army Staff, in mediating this agreement.
Internationally, the stability of this region is a fundamental guarantee for global energy security. In this regard, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement affirming its full support for Pakistani mediation efforts aimed at achieving lasting security and stability. The Kingdom strongly emphasized the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important strategic waterways for oil trade, open to maritime navigation. It clarified that freedom of navigation must be exercised in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, without imposing any restrictions that impede global trade, reflecting the international community's keenness to avoid any economic crises that might result from closing the strait.
