General Authority for Roads Achievements 2025: Reducing Fatalities and Implementing Global Technologies

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved an unprecedented leap forward in the transport and logistics sector, with the General Authority for Roads revealing exceptional results for 2025, including a dramatic 60% reduction in road fatalities and the launch of a modern road network exceeding 1,300 kilometers in length. This achievement is the culmination of intensive strategic efforts aimed at positioning the Kingdom among the world's leading nations in road quality and safety.
The context of strategic transformation and Vision 2030
These results were not a coincidence, but rather the fruit of integrated efforts within the framework of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 , which prioritizes human safety and quality of life. Historically, the Kingdom has suffered from high rates of road accidents, prompting high-level government intervention through the establishment of the Ministerial Committee for Traffic Safety and the launch of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics. These initiatives aim to leverage the Kingdom's geographical location as a global logistics hub connecting three continents, a goal that cannot be achieved without a safe and advanced infrastructure.
Saudi Safety Standards and Road Code
The authority confirmed in its achievements report that the implementation of the Saudi Road Code marked a pivotal turning point, with the percentage of roads meeting the highest international safety standards rising to 80% according to the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). Traffic diversions in work zones also witnessed a significant improvement in safety rates, reaching 95%, as a result of rigorous monitoring and effective partnerships with the private sector to ensure adherence to precise engineering standards.
Mega projects to enhance logistical connectivity
In terms of infrastructure, the Authority continued to expand the road network through 15 vital projects, most notably the Safwa-Rahima road project in the Eastern Province, which includes a 3.2 km sea bridge, enhancing connectivity between industrial and residential centers. The Authority also opened new investment opportunities by launching the project to complete the direct Makkah-Jeddah road, which will reduce travel time to 35 minutes, facilitating the movement of pilgrims and supporting the Hajj and Umrah sector. Additionally, a road linking Asir and Jazan was proposed to support tourism in the south.
Sustainability and Innovation: Global Leadership
In a world first, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has established the concept of a circular economy by implementing the first road using demolition waste in asphalt mixes, in cooperation with the Al-Ahsa Municipality. This step not only reduces costs but also addresses major environmental challenges related to construction waste. Further innovations include the use of recycled rubberized asphalt from tires in Arafat and compacted concrete technology for truck lanes, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to adopting environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions that extend the lifespan of roads and enhance quality of life.
