Saudi Red Crescent plan to support ambulance services for pilgrims in Mecca
In a move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to providing the best healthcare for pilgrims, a specialist from the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, participating in the Health and Security in Hajj Forum in Jeddah, revealed an advanced system implemented to support ambulance services for pilgrims during the 1447 AH Hajj season. This comprehensive plan includes equipping the field fleet with the latest technologies to ensure rapid response and enhance the efficiency of emergency medical services in the holy sites.
A historic journey in serving the guests of God
Historically, since its unification, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health and safety of pilgrims. Emergency healthcare services have developed significantly over the decades. Since the establishment of the Charitable Ambulance Association (later renamed the Saudi Red Crescent Authority), its primary mission has been to provide immediate medical care to pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah. As the number of pilgrims has increased year after year, the Authority has kept pace with this expansion by developing its infrastructure and training its personnel, moving from traditional methods to employing the latest global technologies in field medicine and disaster management, making the Saudi experience a model to be emulated worldwide.
Modern technologies to enhance emergency medical services for pilgrims
Abdulrahman Al Thabit, a specialist with the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, explained that the Authority has provided 71 strategically located ambulance launch points throughout the holy sites this year. In addition, the field fleet has been bolstered with more than 200 modern vehicles, as part of a meticulous plan aimed at enhancing preparedness and rapid response to emergencies.
The development wasn't limited to vehicles; it also included equipping ambulance teams with high-quality equipment and advanced technologies, such as portable first aid kits and dedicated transport for foot patrols and motorcycles, facilitating movement within densely populated areas. Among the most prominent technologies used are advanced devices for performing chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which significantly improves the quality of field resuscitation.
The teams were also equipped with smart devices to monitor vital signs and link them directly to medical guidance via the "e-Paramedic" system. This system allows for the real-time transmission of medical readings and the provision of immediate guidance, thus enhancing the speed of decision-making in critical cases.
