Saudi ports' capabilities on the Red Sea and their economic impact
His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Engineer Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, affirmed the complete readiness and superior capabilities of Saudi ports on the Red Sea, noting that the Kingdom possesses a massive handling capacity on its western coast. This capacity exceeds 17 million standard containers that can be handled annually, a figure far surpassing the total handled in previous periods, thus demonstrating beyond any doubt the ability of these ports to efficiently and effectively accommodate any additional increases in global trade.
Strategic context and development of the maritime transport sector in the Kingdom
Historically, the Red Sea is one of the world's most important and vital waterways, through which a significant portion of global trade passes. In this context, Saudi Arabia has prioritized the development of its maritime infrastructure as part of its Vision 2030, which aims to transform the Kingdom into a global logistics hub connecting the three continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa. The past few years have witnessed substantial investments in port infrastructure development, equipment modernization, and the digitization of customs and operational procedures, contributing to improved logistics performance indicators for the Kingdom on the international stage.
Saudi ports' capacity on the Red Sea and infrastructure integration
Speaking to Al Arabiya, the minister explained that the capacity of Saudi ports on the Red Sea is not a coincidence, but rather the result of a robust and advanced infrastructure. He emphasized the crucial importance of interconnected transport systems, where maritime transport seamlessly integrates with land transport, airports, and railway networks. This physical and operational integration is accompanied by high-level coordination among various government agencies, including the Zakat and Tax Authority, Customs, security agencies, and all sectors operating within the ports, to ensure the smooth flow of goods without any delays.
These remarks were made during an inspection tour conducted by His Excellency to assess cargo handling and supply chain operations at Jeddah Islamic Port, the primary hub port on the Red Sea coast. The tour demonstrated that the port is operating with high regularity and efficiency, reflecting the success of its strategic plans for crisis management and business continuity.
The economic importance and regional and international impact of logistics programs
To reinforce this pivotal role, the Minister of Transport launched the “Logistics Routes Program.” This ambitious program aims to provide additional and innovative operational corridors for receiving containers and diverted goods from the Kingdom’s eastern ports and ports in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and directing them towards Jeddah Islamic Port and other ports on the west coast.
This measure has a significant impact both regionally and internationally. Locally and regionally, it ensures the uninterrupted flow of goods to markets and reinforces the position of Saudi ports as a safe and reliable alternative. Internationally, providing these alternative routes directly contributes to the stability of global trade routes and mitigates the negative impacts of any disruptions to global supply chains, thus underscoring the Kingdom's role as a key stabilizing force in the global economy.
