Saudi Meteorology: Dates for the end of winter and the start of spring

The official spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia, Hussein Al-Qahtani, announced the imminent end of winter, noting that the countdown has already begun, with only 11 days remaining before the season's farewell and the first signs of spring appear. This announcement coincides with noticeable changes in weather maps indicating the start of a rise in temperatures across various regions of the Kingdom.
A warm and exceptional winter this year
In the statement, Al-Qahtani explained that the current winter season is exceptional compared to previous years, with most regions of the Kingdom recording temperatures warmer than the usual annual averages. The spokesperson attributed this relative warmth to the concentration of cold air masses exclusively and historically over the northern and central regions only, preventing their strong and intensely cold effects from reaching the rest of the Kingdom. This has resulted in some cities not experiencing the usual harsh cold for this time of year.
Climatic features of the upcoming transitional phase
With the approach of spring, the Kingdom's weather enters a transitional phase typically characterized by rapid and sharp fluctuations. Climatologically, this period is known for its interweaving of seasons, as pressure systems begin to shift, leading to increased surface wind activity that may stir up dust and sand at times. Later in spring, there is also the possibility of scattered rainfall, known locally as "Sarayat" rain. This period is crucial for gradually bidding farewell to heavy winter clothing, especially in coastal areas, which have already begun to experience the end of the cold weather.
Expected effects and the onset of rising temperatures
Current climate indicators show the beginning of a gradual and noticeable rise in temperatures, coinciding with the receding of cold waves. The coming days are expected to see relative stability in maximum and minimum temperatures, with daytime highs tending towards warm and nighttime lows. Experts advise following daily weather forecasts during this period, as transitional periods between seasons can bring some weather surprises, particularly regarding temperature differences between day and night, which can affect public health and increase the chances of contracting seasonal illnesses such as influenza.
It is worth noting that the National Center for Meteorology continues to monitor the weather around the clock, issuing its automated alerts to ensure the safety of citizens and residents, as the Kingdom prepares to welcome the spring season with its distinctive weather characteristics and stunning nature that covers the deserts and plains.
