Makkah Route Initiative: Launching a new gateway in Indonesia to serve pilgrims

As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to facilitate the Hajj pilgrimage, the Kingdom inaugurated the fourth Makkah Route Initiative in the Republic of Indonesia, specifically in Makassar, at the initiative's terminal in Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. The inauguration saw the departure of the first flights carrying beneficiaries directly to Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, marking a new pioneering step in serving pilgrims and facilitating their performance of the Hajj rituals with ease and peace of mind.

Integrated services provided by the Makkah Route Initiative for pilgrims

The Makkah Route Initiative aims to provide high-quality services to pilgrims from participating countries, enabling them to complete all entry procedures into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from their home airports. This streamlined journey begins with the electronic issuance of the Hajj visa and the collection of biometric data (fingerprints), followed by procedures by the General Directorate of Passports to verify health requirements and facilitate entry.

In addition, the initiative includes coding and sorting pilgrims' luggage according to their transportation and accommodation arrangements in the Kingdom. Upon arrival, pilgrims are transferred directly to dedicated buses that take them to their accommodations in Mecca and Medina via designated routes, while partner organizations deliver their luggage directly to their rooms, eliminating long waiting times at arrival airports.

Historical dimensions and Saudi leadership in serving pilgrims

This step comes in the eighth year of the initiative, which was officially launched in 1438 AH (2017 CE). The initiative is a unique model of collaborative government work, overseen by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with an integrated network of partners including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media; the General Authority of Civil Aviation; the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority; the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA); the General Authority for Endowments; the Guests of God Service Program; and the General Directorate of Passports, in conjunction with the digital partner (stc Group). Since its launch, the initiative has successfully provided its high-quality services to more than 1,254,994 pilgrims, highlighting the significant technological and organizational advancements achieved by the Kingdom.

Regional and international impact of facilitating the Hajj journey

The opening of the fourth port of entry in Indonesia carries significant regional and international implications. As the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, Indonesia is a strategic partner for the Kingdom in ensuring the success of the Hajj season. This expansion will contribute to strengthening the distinguished bilateral relations between the two countries and alleviate the logistical burden on Indonesian authorities and citizens wishing to perform the pilgrimage.

At the international level, through this initiative, the Kingdom is presenting a globally exemplary model for crowd management and the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence to facilitate international travel. These efforts are also directly aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Guests of God Service Program, which aims to enable the largest possible number of Muslims to perform Hajj and Umrah in the best possible way, with the highest levels of comfort and safety.
