Inauguration of the Saudi Handicrafts Exhibition at the King Abdulaziz Library

Under the patronage of His Highness Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture, the King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh is preparing to launch a prominent cultural event: the inauguration of the exhibition, “Saudi Handicrafts: A Heritage of Cultural Creativity.” The exhibition is scheduled to open to visitors on December 1, 2025, and will run until February 28, 2026, in the Services and Access Hall of the library branch located on Khurais Road.
Coinciding with the Year of Handicrafts 2025
The organization of this exhibition coincides with the naming of 2025 as the “Year of Handicrafts,” an initiative that reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s growing interest in the heritage and culture sector within the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. This coincidence aims to highlight the cultural value of handicrafts that have formed an integral part of the life of the Saudi people throughout the ages, transforming from tools for daily use for survival into works of art that express national identity.
A journey through history and geographical diversity
The exhibition features a rich visual and historical narrative, going beyond simply showcasing finished products to delve into the history of traditional crafts that varied across the Kingdom's geography. Visitors will be able to explore:
- Sadu weaving: which reflects the heritage of the desert and the art of weaving, which is registered on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
- The palm frond industry: linked to the palm and oasis environment, which highlights the ingenuity in exploiting natural resources.
- Pottery and leather: which represent the pillars of traditional industries in old Saudi villages and cities.
Rare and distinctive photographs taken from the “Encyclopedia of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” published by the library will also be displayed, adding a scientific documentary dimension to the exhibits.
Economic and educational dimensions of the exhibition
The exhibition transcends the traditional museum display, focusing instead on the economic and social impact of crafts. Through this event, the library aims to highlight the role of handicrafts as a vital economic resource for productive families and artisans, and as an attraction within the cultural tourism sector. To ensure the sustainability of this heritage, the library has dedicated a children's pavilion and interactive workshops designed to transmit these skills to new generations, strengthening their connection to their cultural roots through hands-on practice and learning.
The King Abdulaziz Public Library invites all those interested in heritage, researchers, and families to visit the exhibition and participate in the accompanying narrative and interactive activities, in support of Saudi creators and in celebration of the authentic cultural heritage.
