Details of Saudi support to bolster Pakistan's Green Initiative

In a move reflecting the depth of the strategic relationship between the two countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has provided a financial and technical grant to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to support Pakistan's Green Initiative. This pioneering step will directly contribute to enhancing center-pivot irrigation projects and systems, improving the quality and volume of agricultural production, creating new job opportunities for local communities, preserving the environment, and achieving food security, which has become a top priority on the international stage.
Roots of strategic cooperation between Riyadh and Islamabad
This grant is based on a long history of fraternal relations and joint cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. For decades, the Kingdom has been a key supporter of the stability and development of the Pakistani economy through various crises and phases. In the more recent context, this step aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Green Middle East Initiative, launched by the Kingdom to lead regional and international efforts in combating climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and fighting desertification. Transferring this pioneering environmental experience to sister nations reflects the Saudi leadership's commitment to promoting sustainable development beyond its borders and building strategic partnerships that serve the interests of all the peoples of the region.
Details of Saudi support for the success of Pakistan's Green Initiative
The announcement of this support came during an official visit by a high-level Saudi delegation to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, headed by the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture for Agriculture, Dr. Sulaiman Al-Khatib. The grant is designed to meet the actual needs of the Pakistani agricultural sector, with the project covering an area of 500 hectares. The project includes the supply and installation of 10 modern center-pivot irrigation systems, equipped with all necessary accessories such as fertilization equipment, generators, and power-generating motors. The support is not limited to financial assistance; it also includes a comprehensive training program for Pakistani specialists on operation and management to ensure the project's sustainability and its service to beneficiaries in the Punjab province and the Bahawalpur region.
Expected impact: Local development and regional food security
This project has significant developmental dimensions on several levels. Locally, it will contribute to enhancing water use efficiency in agriculture and reducing water waste, particularly in semi-arid regions suffering from water scarcity. It will also increase the area of irrigated land and boost agricultural production in both quantity and quality, thus paving the way for crop diversification. Economically and socially, the project will improve the living conditions of farmers by creating sustainable employment opportunities and providing technical training. Regionally and internationally, this collaboration serves the goals of sustainable development and strengthens regional food security in light of the challenges facing global supply chains.
Towards broader economic horizons
The partnership extends beyond the agricultural sector to encompass other vital areas. The Kingdom and Pakistan recently signed a framework agreement for economic cooperation, aiming to propel their bilateral partnership to broader horizons. This agreement focuses on exploring promising investment opportunities in sectors of shared priority, such as renewable energy, industry, mining, information technology, and tourism. This is further underscored by the strategic achievement of the electricity interconnection project between the Kingdom and Pakistan, confirming that support for the environmental and agricultural sectors is part of a comprehensive vision aimed at achieving economic integration and shared prosperity for the two brotherly nations.
