In a decisive diplomatic move reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to protecting its national security, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs the summoning of the Iraqi Ambassador to the Kingdom, Ms. Safia Taleb Al-Suhail. This urgent measure was taken in response to the continued attacks and blatant threats targeting the territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and several other sisterly Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. These threats included the launching of explosive-laden drones from within Iraqi territory, a flagrant violation of international laws and norms governing good neighborly relations between states.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs' firm stance towards the threats
During the official summons, the Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Saud Al-Sati, delivered a strongly worded official protest note to the Iraqi Ambassador. The note included the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strongest condemnation of the repeated attacks originating from Iraqi territory. Ambassador Al-Sati stressed the necessity for the Iraqi government to deal with these threats and attacks launched from its territory with full responsibility and seriousness, emphasizing the Kingdom's categorical rejection of any violation of the sovereignty of states or any attempt to threaten the security and stability of the entire region. The Ministry also conveyed a clear message that the Kingdom will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to defend its security and protect its territory and citizens from any external threat.
Regional context and border control challenges
These developments come amid a complex regional context marked by escalating security tensions. Historically, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have sought to build positive and robust relations with Iraq, based on mutual respect and shared interests, and to support Baghdad’s efforts to restore its stability and sovereignty. However, the exploitation of Iraqi territory by some armed groups and non-state actors as a launching pad for cross-border drone attacks poses significant challenges to the Iraqi government’s ability to enforce the rule of law and control its borders. These attacks not only target infrastructure and civilian areas but also seek to undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace and economic cooperation in the Middle East.
Expected repercussions on regional and international security
This event is of paramount importance and has anticipated repercussions on several levels. Domestically, the Kingdom, through this summons, affirms its complete vigilance and readiness to address any threat to its internal security. Regionally, this measure sends a strong message of solidarity with its fellow Gulf states, emphasizing that Gulf security is indivisible and that any attack on a member state is a threat to the entire Gulf Cooperation Council. Internationally, the continuation of these attacks is a source of concern for the international community, given the strategic importance of the Gulf region to the stability of global energy markets. This firm diplomatic stance is expected to prompt the international community to exert pressure to enhance regional security and to demand that the parties involved assume their responsibilities to prevent the region from sliding into further escalation and tension.
