The Saudi Foreign Minister receives a letter from his Iraqi counterpart to strengthen cooperation

His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, received a written message from His Excellency Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq. The message concerned ways to strengthen the robust bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and mechanisms to support and develop them in various fields to serve their common interests.
The message was received by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral International Affairs, Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Rassi, during his meeting today at the Ministry's headquarters in Riyadh with the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the Kingdom, Safia Taleb Al-Suhail. During the meeting, they reviewed aspects of joint cooperation and discussed a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest.
An upward trajectory in Saudi-Iraqi relations
This message comes within the context of active and ongoing diplomatic efforts between Riyadh and Baghdad, which have witnessed significant progress in recent years. This step reflects the commitment of both countries' leaderships to continued coordination and consultation on critical issues, as Saudi-Iraqi relations represent a cornerstone of stability in the Arab region.
This growing cooperation is based on solid foundations laid by the Saudi-Iraqi Coordination Council, established in 2017, which has played a pivotal role in transforming relations from a state of stagnation to one of comprehensive strategic partnership. These efforts have resulted in the signing of numerous agreements and memoranda of understanding covering the energy, investment, transportation, and education sectors.
Economic and security dimensions of the partnership
The importance of continuous communication between the two countries' foreign ministers extends beyond the political sphere to include economic and developmental aspects. The Kingdom and Iraq are working diligently to implement the electricity interconnection project, in addition to activating Saudi investments within Iraq and reopening the Arar border crossing, which has served as a vital trade artery connecting the two nations.
Regionally, the Saudi-Iraqi rapprochement is seen as a necessary balancing factor in the Middle East. The Kingdom consistently supports Iraq's sovereignty and its return to its natural and leading role within the Arab world, a stance affirmed by frequent summits and bilateral meetings, making the exchange of messages and diplomatic visits an integral part of the shared Arab national security framework.
