His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, met today with His Excellency José Manuel Álvarez, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Spain, on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Strengthening bilateral relations and discussing current developments
During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed the strong relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Spain, and discussed ways to enhance and develop them in various fields to serve the interests of both countries and their friendly peoples. They also discussed the latest regional and international developments and the efforts being made in this regard, in addition to exchanging views on a number of issues of common interest on the agenda of the Davos Forum.
The depth of Saudi-Spanish relations
These talks come within the framework of the historical and strategic relations that bind Riyadh and Madrid. The two countries enjoy close ties that extend back decades, always characterized by mutual respect and fruitful cooperation. Spain is a significant economic partner for the Kingdom in Europe, and recent years have witnessed remarkable cooperation in vital sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and defense industries. Perhaps the most prominent example of this is the Haramain High-Speed Railway project, which stands as a symbol of technical and engineering cooperation between the two countries.
Convergence of views on international issues
On the political front, relations are characterized by a significant convergence of views on many complex issues in the Middle East and the world. Spain plays a pivotal role within the European Union in supporting peace and stability in the Arab region, which aligns with the leading role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in promoting regional security and peace. This meeting in Davos presents an opportunity to coordinate diplomatic positions to address current global challenges, both political and economic.
Future prospects for economic cooperation
The meeting is particularly significant in light of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which opens up vast opportunities for Spanish companies to invest in the mega-projects underway in the Kingdom. Through these periodic meetings, both sides aim to remove obstacles for investors and increase trade volumes, reflecting the significant economic potential of the two G20 member countries.
The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the Swiss Confederation and the Principality of Liechtenstein, Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Dawood, and the Advisor to His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Al-Yahya.
