Saudi customs ports: 642 smuggling attempts thwarted in one week

As part of its ongoing efforts to protect national and societal security, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) announced a new security achievement: thwarting 642 smuggling attempts across all customs ports in the Kingdom in just one week. This result underscores the high level of vigilance demonstrated by the Authority's personnel and their ability to combat contraband of all types and forms, forming the first line of defense for the country's security and economy.
The seizures included a wide range of prohibited and dangerous substances, with 81 types of narcotics confiscated, including hashish, cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, and Captagon pills. In addition, the smuggling of more than 200 other prohibited substances, 1,392 tobacco products, and eight attempts to smuggle cash, as well as six types of weapons and related equipment, were thwarted, reflecting the diverse criminal methods employed by smugglers.
The role of customs ports in protecting the security and economy of the nation
Customs ports play a vital role, not only in facilitating international trade but also in forming a strong bulwark against anything that threatens the security and stability of society. These efforts are part of a broader strategic approach adopted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the General Authority of Customs and Trade (ZATCA) continuously updates and develops its monitoring systems, utilizing the latest global technologies in inspection and detection, in addition to training and qualifying its personnel to enhance their ability to detect innovative smuggling methods. These stringent measures contribute directly to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes the security of the nation and its citizens and works to build a prosperous economy and a safe and stable environment.
Dimensions that transcend borders: Security and social impact
The success of customs authorities in thwarting these large-scale smuggling operations has profound positive effects that extend far beyond simply apprehending offenders. From a security perspective, preventing the entry of weapons and explosives contributes to maintaining stability and deterring crime. From a social and health perspective, combating drugs directly protects youth and society from the devastating scourge of addiction, which threatens the family structure and drains individuals' potential. Economically, these efforts help protect the local market from counterfeit and adulterated goods, prevent tax and customs evasion that harms the national economy, and foster a fair and secure investment environment for all.
The ZATCA Authority affirmed its commitment to strengthening customs control over the Kingdom's imports and exports, in continuous cooperation and coordination with its partners in the security and military sectors. It also reiterated its call for everyone to contribute to combating smuggling to protect society and the national economy by contacting them via the dedicated security reporting hotline (1910), email ([email protected]), or the international number (00966114208417). The Authority emphasized that all reports are treated with complete confidentiality and that a financial reward will be given to the informant if the information provided is accurate.
