The development of Saudi-Canadian relations and talks to enhance security

His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, received the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry headquarters in Riyadh for important bilateral talks. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen Saudi-Canadian relations across various fields, serving the mutual interests of the two friendly nations. This visit comes at a time when the region is facing rapidly evolving geopolitical challenges, necessitating high-level coordination among regional and international powers to ensure stability and peace.
A long and fruitful history of Saudi-Canadian relations
Saudi-Canadian relations are based on a long history spanning more than fifty years, built on foundations of mutual respect and shared interests. Historically, both Riyadh and Ottawa have been keen to build bridges of diplomatic and economic communication, contributing to a fertile environment for bilateral cooperation. During their recent meeting, both sides emphasized the positive and growing momentum of these ties, which is clearly reflected in the level of bilateral trade. The volume of trade between the two countries exceeded 12 billion Saudi riyals in 2024, a strong indicator of the robustness of the economic partnership. In this context, the two ministers welcomed the formation of the Saudi-Canadian Business Council, which will play a pivotal role in propelling economic and trade cooperation to broader horizons.
Prospects for strategic cooperation and its expected impact
The development of cooperation between Riyadh and Ottawa is of paramount importance and is expected to have a positive impact both domestically and internationally. The two sides explored ways to enhance their partnership in vital and high-priority sectors, such as space, artificial intelligence, mining, tourism, education, and pharmaceuticals. This diversity of cooperation aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to diversify income sources and transfer advanced technology. The two ministers also commended the progress made in the ongoing negotiations regarding the agreement on the promotion and protection of foreign investment between the two countries. In the field of education, they welcomed the convening of the second Education Partnership Forum between the two countries, scheduled for March 30, 2026, which will further strengthen the exchange of expertise and human capacity building.
Unifying visions towards regional security and deterring threats
The discussions were not limited to economic matters but also extended to the security challenges facing the Middle East region. The two sides exchanged views on regional developments and expressed their strong condemnation of Iran's destabilizing behavior in the region. This included denouncing Iranian attacks targeting the Kingdom and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, which constitute a clear threat to regional and international security. The two ministers called on Tehran to immediately cease these attacks and respect the principles of good neighborliness and international humanitarian law. They also stressed the necessity for Iran to comply with relevant Security Council resolutions and to stop supporting, funding, and arming its affiliated militias in Arab countries, as this undermines the foundations of peace and security.
Enhancing maritime security and protecting international navigation
At the conclusion of the talks, both sides discussed the importance of concerted international efforts to reduce tensions and protect vital infrastructure. The Canadian Foreign Minister expressed her country's full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, commending the Kingdom's valuable assistance in facilitating the return and evacuation of Canadian citizens from conflict zones. She reaffirmed Canada's readiness to cooperate closely with the Kingdom to promote regional stability and protect civilians amidst ongoing conflicts affecting the Gulf and Middle East. Both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing maritime and energy security to ensure the continued safe flow of global supplies. Finally, the Canadian Minister expressed her deep gratitude for the warm welcome and generous hospitality, affirming her country's commitment to strengthening a robust and forward-looking partnership with the Kingdom.
