The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia joins the international community in celebrating World Water Day , observed annually by the United Nations on March 22nd. The upcoming events for 2026 will focus on highlighting the vital role of water and sanitation in achieving gender equality. This global occasion aims to raise awareness of the importance of fresh water and promote the sustainable management of natural water resources through various activities, including awareness campaigns, water conservation, and the protection of water sources, in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to provide safe water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The historical roots and purpose of the United Nations' recognition of this occasion
The idea of a World Water Day originated in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The following year, in 1993, the United Nations General Assembly adopted March 22 as the first World Water Day . Since then, this day has become a crucial global platform for highlighting the global water crisis, as reliable statistics indicate that billions of people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. This historical context underscores the importance of concerted international efforts to address the climate and environmental challenges that threaten global water security.
The regional and international impact of Saudi Arabia's efforts in the water sector
At both the regional and international levels, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plays a pivotal role in addressing the challenges of water scarcity. As the world’s largest producer of desalinated water, the Kingdom recognizes its responsibility to share knowledge and expertise with the international community. In this context, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has emphasized that these ongoing efforts reflect the Kingdom’s leading position. These efforts culminated in the announcement by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, of the establishment of a global water organization headquartered in Riyadh. This organization aims to unify international efforts and strengthen collaborative initiatives to address water issues and challenges worldwide. Furthermore, the Kingdom is preparing to host the 11th World Water Forum, the largest international gathering for discussing water policies, reflecting the anticipated positive impact of Saudi leadership in shaping the future of global water security.
Blue Initiative and Activating the Role of Women and Society
Domestically, the Ministry's efforts extended beyond technical aspects to include community awareness. It launched the "Zarqa" initiative, which aims to empower women to play a more active role in water conservation. This initiative encompasses a range of activities and awareness lectures, volunteer opportunities, and competitions for university and school students, as well as training and capacity-building workshops in the water sector. In its first phase, the initiative reached approximately 5 million beneficiaries across 20 universities and 450 schools. It also saw the active participation of around 410 young men and women in its programs, along with 610 volunteers who contributed over 47,000 volunteer hours, thus promoting the adoption of the latest innovations and advanced technologies for water conservation and effectively addressing water scarcity.
