Details of the Saudi women's victory in the European Girls' Informatics Olympiad
Saudi female students excelled in the European Girls' Informatics Olympiad, with Reem Ali Al-Mutawa, representing the General Directorate of Education in Al-Ahsa Governorate, winning a well-deserved bronze medal. Similarly, students Maryam Mohammed Al-Jawad and Ayat Hussein Al-Khalifa, from the General Directorate of Education in the Eastern Province, received certificates of appreciation for their outstanding performance. The historical roots of women's programming competitions
The participation of girls in technology competitions is not a recent phenomenon, but rather the result of sustained international efforts to empower women in the technology sector. The European Girls' Informatics Olympiad was launched for the first time in Zurich, Switzerland in 2021. This unique annual event was established in response to the pressing need to deepen girls' interest in computer science and programming. The competition is based primarily on solving complex algorithmic and programming problems that require advanced analytical and design skills. From its inception, the initiative has aimed to encourage girls to compete internationally, discover and support talented individuals, build inspiring female role models in the technology sector, and foster cultural exchange and friendly relations among competitors, teachers, and computer scientists from participating countries.
The role of “Talent” in creating future champions
The King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education, is behind this remarkable success. This marks the Kingdom's fifth regular participation since 2022. This achievement is a natural extension of Mawhiba's tremendous efforts in preparing students for international scientific competitions. These efforts begin with a high-quality and comprehensive training journey, starting with early identification and nomination, progressing through local competitions and intensive training camps for female students, and culminating in representing the Kingdom on the world stage. Mawhiba is a leading global institution in discovering, nurturing, and empowering gifted individuals, adopting a comprehensive national strategy for developing talent in scientific fields of national priority.
Strategic dimensions and the impact of the achievement locally and internationally
This victory carries strategic dimensions that extend far beyond simply winning medals. Domestically, this achievement is a tangible manifestation of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on empowering women, supporting innovation, and building a vibrant society and a knowledge-based economy. The success of these Saudi students serves as an inspiration to thousands of girls in Saudi schools, encouraging them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Regionally and internationally, this excellence solidifies the Kingdom's position as a rising power in technology and programming, demonstrating that investing in young minds yields competencies capable of competing with their counterparts in developed countries. This active Saudi presence also strengthens the culture of innovation and confirms to the world that the Kingdom is steadily progressing towards leading the digital future.
