The Meteorology Department warns: Weather conditions in Saudi Arabia include winds and rain

The National Center for Meteorology announced important updates regarding the weather in Saudi Arabia, indicating that most regions of the Kingdom are expected to experience significant weather fluctuations on Wednesday and Thursday, March 25th and 26th. These forecasts include strong surface winds that will stir up dust and sand, with speeds potentially exceeding 60 kilometers per hour, necessitating caution from citizens and residents.
Weather conditions in Saudi Arabia affect visibility and navigation
The center explained in its periodic reports that this rainy weather and strong winds will lead to near-zero or even zero horizontal visibility on several main roads and highways. Warnings also included coastal areas, where a sharp rise in sea waves is expected, potentially exceeding two and a half meters. This significant increase poses a danger to maritime navigation, necessitating extreme caution from seafarers and fishermen during this period to ensure their safety.
Transitional climate and typical spring fluctuations
These weather changes are part of the transitional periods experienced by the Arabian Peninsula's climate, specifically during spring. Historically, this period in Saudi Arabia is characterized by frequent and rapid weather fluctuations, as warm air masses from the south collide with cold air masses from the north. This collision typically results in increased surface wind activity, which can trigger sandstorms, as well as the formation of rain-bearing thunderclouds. These phenomena are part of the natural climatic cycle, contributing to the regeneration of vegetation in desert areas and the replenishment of groundwater.
Economic and social dimensions of weather fluctuations
These climate changes have a direct impact on many vital sectors both locally and regionally. Locally, sandstorms and poor visibility affect land and air transport, requiring close coordination between traffic authorities and civil aviation agencies to prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow. On the other hand, varying rainfall plays a significant positive role in supporting the agricultural sector, especially in areas that rely on rain-fed agriculture and natural pastures, which in turn positively impacts the local economy and food security.
Official guidelines to ensure public safety
For his part, the official spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein Al-Qahtani, urged all citizens and residents to follow the instructions and guidelines issued by the relevant authorities, given the continued likelihood of varying intensities of rainfall. Al-Qahtani emphasized the importance of using the official “Anwaa” application to monitor weather developments across different regions in real time. He affirmed that the center is closely monitoring all developments to provide immediate updates.
He noted that accompanying phenomena include strong downdrafts, hail, a noticeable drop in temperatures, and dense fog in the highlands. There is also a possibility of snowfall on the Al-Lawz Mountains in the Tabuk region, a weather phenomenon that usually attracts many visitors and photography enthusiasts, but requires special preparations to cope with the extremely cold conditions and to drive cautiously on mountain roads.
