Weather fluctuations in Saudi Arabia: Rain and floods expected until Sunday

Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing a period of unstable weather, with weather fluctuations . Most regions of the Kingdom are bracing for moderate to heavy thunderstorms, beginning Wednesday and continuing until next Sunday. This weather pattern is accompanied by flash floods and the potential for tornadoes, prompting strong official warnings urging adherence to public safety guidelines issued by the relevant authorities.
The historical context of the phenomenon of climate fluctuations in Saudi Arabia
Historically, the Arabian Peninsula has been known for its arid desert climate, but recent years have witnessed a noticeable shift in weather patterns. These climatic fluctuations in Saudi Arabia are most active during the transitional periods between seasons, specifically in spring and autumn. These changes are attributed to the expansion of low-pressure systems and the interaction of warm, humid air masses originating from the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea with cold air masses, resulting in severe atmospheric instability. The Kingdom has recorded several exceptional rainfall events in the last decade, leading to the overflowing of major wadis (valleys), reflecting a shift in regional weather dynamics.
Map of areas affected by heavy rains
The National Center for Meteorology revealed that the current weather conditions include the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, Tabuk, Madinah, Hail and Al-Qassim regions, with moderate to heavy rains that will peak on Wednesday and Thursday.
Regarding the Makkah region, the center explained that the effects extend to include the governorates of Taif, Maysan, Adham, Al-Ardiyat, Turbah, Al-Muwayh, Al-Khurmah, and Ranyah, with rainfall reaching heavy levels until Friday.
The report also indicated that the Riyadh region will be affected by heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday, concentrated in the governorates of Diriyah, Al-Muzahmiyah, Al-Kharj, Ad-Dilam, Al-Hariq, Ar-Rayn, Al-Qiddiyah, Rumah, Al-Aflaj, and Hawtat Bani Tamim. The weather system will also affect Al-Majma'ah, Az-Zulfi, Al-Ghat, Al-Quway'iyah, Ad-Dawadmi, Afif, Shaqra, Thadiq, Huraymila, Dhurma, and Marat, with the rain turning to light on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Meanwhile, Wadi Ad-Dawasir and As-Sulayyil will experience heavy rain on Wednesday.
Weather effects on the southern highlands and the eastern region
The center noted that the Al-Baha region and its governorates, in addition to the Asir region, which includes Abha, Khamis Mushait, Ahad Rafidah, Sarat Abidah, Dhahran Al-Janoub, Al-Harjah, Bisha, Al-Namas, Tanomah, Rijal Alma, Bariq, Muhayil Asir, Al-Majardah, Balqarn, and Al-Farshah, will be affected by moderate rainfall continuing until Sunday. It also indicated that the Jazan region is experiencing similar rainfall, including Al-Raith, Haroub, Al-Dayer, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, Al-Ardah, and Al-Harth. The weather system will extend to the Eastern Province, bringing heavy rainfall to Hafr Al-Batin and Al-Khafji starting Thursday and peaking on Sunday.
Expected effects and the importance of early preparation
These weather changes have far-reaching impacts at both the local and regional levels. Locally, the rainfall contributes to replenishing groundwater reserves and supporting the agricultural sector; however, its intensity necessitates mobilization of infrastructure authorities to mitigate flood damage. Regionally, these events reflect the interconnectedness of climate systems in the Middle East. This underscores the importance of the Kingdom's highly efficient early warning systems in minimizing risks and protecting lives and property.
Severe weather phenomena and safety guidelines
The National Center of Meteorology warned of severe weather phenomena accompanying the situation, including downdrafts that stir up dust, rapid flash floods, hail, and high waves, with the possibility of the formation of tornadoes or waterspouts in areas with heavy rainfall.
He concluded his report by confirming that the chances of rainfall will continue until the end of next week, stressing the importance of monitoring the early warning platform and the weather forecasting application, and fully adhering to the instructions of the competent authorities in order to protect lives.
