The Kingdom elected Vice-President of the Global Research Council for the third time

In a new achievement reflecting its prestigious scientific standing on the international stage, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), Dr. Munir bin Mahmoud Al-Dasouqi, was unanimously elected to the position of Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of the Global Research Council. This significant decision was made during the Council's 14th Annual Meeting in 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand. This election, marking the third consecutive time the Kingdom has been elected to this position, underscores the growing international confidence in Riyadh's leading role in supporting research, development, and innovation globally.
The Kingdom's pioneering journey in the World Research Council
To understand the significance of this achievement, it is essential to consider the historical context of the establishment of this international platform. The Council was founded in 2012 as a virtual organization bringing together the heads of science, engineering, and research funding agencies from around the world. Since its inception, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been keen to maintain an active and influential presence in this major scientific gathering. Historically, the Kingdom's role has not been limited to honorary participation, but has extended to leading regional efforts, with the Kingdom representing the Middle East and North Africa region on the Board of Governors. Furthermore, the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) hosts the Council's regional secretariat, making Riyadh a vital hub for coordinating scientific efforts, unifying visions among the countries of the region, and supporting joint regional action that contributes to advancing knowledge and innovation.
The strategic impact of strengthening the research and innovation system
This election carries profound strategic dimensions and an anticipated impact across three key levels: local, regional, and international. Locally, this international recognition aligns closely with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which prioritizes the transition to a knowledge-based economy. Empowering the research, development, and innovation ecosystem reflects the national aspirations launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince to enhance the Kingdom’s global competitiveness and transform it into a hub for scientists and innovators.
At the regional level, the Kingdom's continued leadership ensures a strong and influential voice for the Middle East and North Africa in shaping global science policies. The Kingdom continues to play its pivotal role by organizing regular regional meetings, facilitating the exchange of expertise and capacity building for scientific institutions in neighboring countries, in accordance with international best practices.
An international platform to address future challenges
Internationally, the Council is a unique global platform that brings together leading research councils and R&D funding institutions from around the world. Its primary objective is to foster communication and support high-quality research collaboration. As Vice President, the Kingdom will actively contribute to guiding global research towards addressing pressing human challenges such as climate change, resource sustainability, and the development of artificial intelligence technologies. This ongoing presence underscores the Kingdom's commitment not merely to technology but to being a key partner in knowledge creation and shaping the future of science globally.
