A new international achievement: Saudi Arabia joins the United Nations Committee on Science and Technology
In a move reflecting its growing global standing, the members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) for the period from 2027 to 2030. This unanimous election confirms the great international confidence in the Kingdom’s capabilities and contributes directly to enhancing its international presence and its leading role in shaping global trends and policies in the fields of science, technology and innovation.
Historical context and strategic role of the Kingdom
This achievement was not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of a long history of cooperation and partnership between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the international community. The Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTED) was established in 1992 and comprises 43 member states. It serves as the primary advisory body to the United Nations General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council on all matters related to science and technology and their profound impact on comprehensive development. Historically, the Kingdom has been keen to maintain an active presence in international forums, a commitment clearly demonstrated when it assumed the presidency of the 25th session of the Commission in 2022, represented by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission. This underscored its strong international standing and demonstrated its capacity to lead the global dialogue in the digital and technological fields.
Expected impact at the local, regional, and international levels
The Kingdom's membership in this UN council is of paramount importance and has multifaceted implications. Domestically, this move aligns perfectly with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which places innovation and digital transformation at the heart of its development strategy. Regionally, the Kingdom reinforces its position as a pivotal technology hub in the Middle East, opening up vast opportunities for exchanging expertise and supporting neighboring countries in their technological advancements. Internationally, this seat allows the Kingdom to actively participate in developing international recommendations and guidelines submitted to the UN General Assembly for adoption, as well as in shaping policies to advance developing countries.
Enhancing competitiveness and governance of emerging technologies
In this context, the Communications and Space Technology Commission (CSTC) explained that the Kingdom's election reflects its active contribution to discussing global issues related to emerging technologies, data governance, artificial intelligence, and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. The CSTC indicated that its membership will contribute to monitoring the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the Global Digital Charter (GDC). The Commission noted that this significant national achievement comes as a result of continuous and fruitful coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reinforcing the Kingdom's role as an active international partner within the United Nations system, particularly in the fields of communications, technology, and space. This ongoing presence ensures a contribution to shaping a sustainable digital environment and enhancing the Kingdom's global competitiveness and leadership, reflecting its firm commitment to building a prosperous technological future for all humanity.
