A Saudi alliance to secure food supply chains and achieve Vision 2030

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Mansour Al-Mashiti, chaired a comprehensive virtual meeting aimed at strengthening and securing food supply chains in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This strategic meeting saw broad participation from government and private entities, with the primary objective of ensuring the sustainability of agricultural production and increasing self-sufficiency rates, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. The coordination meeting included the heads of specialized committees within the Federation of Saudi Chambers, along with prominent government bodies such as the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, the General Authority for Food Security, and the Weqaa Center, reflecting the concerted national efforts to achieve comprehensive food security.
Historical context and national efforts to enhance food security
This step comes within a historical context marked by governmental efforts to protect the Kingdom's food resources. Over the past decades, Saudi Arabia has recognized the importance of reducing its reliance on imports, especially in light of global economic and geopolitical fluctuations that have repeatedly impacted international trade. Since the launch of Vision 2030, this understanding has translated into clearly defined institutional strategies, leading to the restructuring of the agricultural sector and the establishment of specialized bodies responsible for oversight, quality, and availability. This historic transformation has paved the way for building an integrated system capable of absorbing global shocks and ensuring an uninterrupted flow of food to citizens and residents, making the current alliance a natural extension of a forward-looking vision that prioritizes the security of its citizens.
Implementing best agricultural practices to support food supply chains
During the meeting, participants discussed mechanisms for coordinating joint efforts between the public and private sectors to implement best agricultural practices that ensure the stability of local markets and meet growing consumer needs. Discussions focused extensively on streamlining the flow of food products to and from the Kingdom, as well as coordinating the complex logistics of feed inputs. The efficiency of food supply chains depends fundamentally on adopting modern agricultural technologies, conserving water, and supporting local farmers with knowledge and technology—all of which the Ministry and its partners are working to implement to guarantee the quality and abundance of crops throughout the year.
Strategic impact and sustainability of supplies locally and regionally
This strategic alliance holds immense importance and is expected to have an impact that extends beyond local borders to the regional and international levels. Locally, participants discussed building an effective government communication network to ensure the sustainability of supplies and address any challenges that might hinder the delivery of agricultural products to the end user. Regionally, the Kingdom's success in securing its food supply reinforces its position as a stable economic power capable of confronting global crises and meeting its needs with high flexibility. Participants commended the unlimited government support that has resulted in significant leaps forward in record time, with the agricultural sector's contribution to the GDP soaring to 114 billion riyals by the end of 2024.
Unprecedented achievements in self-sufficiency
As a culmination of these ongoing efforts, many agricultural crops and local products have achieved historic self-sufficiency rates, exceeding 100% in some vital sectors. This unprecedented achievement would not have been possible without sound planning and effective partnership among all stakeholders. Strengthening national food security is no longer merely an aspirational goal, but a tangible reality that contributes to diversifying national income sources, provides thousands of job opportunities, and ensures a secure and prosperous future for generations to come, under wise leadership that places resource sustainability at the heart of its development path.
