Saturday's weather in Saudi Arabia: Winds and dust hit 8 regions

The National Center for Meteorology announced details of Saturday's weather forecast for Saudi Arabia, warning of significant weather fluctuations, including continued strong winds stirring up dust and sand across large parts of the Kingdom. These forecasts underscore the importance of caution for citizens and residents, especially given the rapid changes in weather maps, which are directly impacting horizontal visibility in several vital areas.
The usual climatic patterns and weather fluctuations in the Kingdom
The Arabian Peninsula, and Saudi Arabia in particular, is characterized by a desert and semi-desert climate, making it susceptible to rapid weather changes, especially during seasonal transitions. Historically, these periods have been marked by active northwesterly winds that stir up sandstorms and dust walls. These weather phenomena are an integral part of the regional climate, as the open terrain facilitates the movement of dust masses across vast areas, leading to frequent instances of near-zero visibility in open areas and on highways.
The impact of Saturday's weather in Saudi Arabia on daily life and society
will have Saturday's weather in Saudi Arabia tangible effects on several levels, both locally and regionally. Locally, the wind and dust activity requires drivers to exercise extreme caution on highways connecting cities to avoid traffic accidents caused by reduced visibility. Those with respiratory conditions and asthma are advised to remain indoors to avoid health complications. On the other hand, the expected thunderstorms and rain over the southwestern highlands will have a significant positive impact on the local agricultural sector, contributing to the irrigation of agricultural terraces and enhancing the vegetation cover for which these areas are known, thus supporting ecotourism and domestic tourism.
Areas affected by wind activity and reduced visibility
According to the official statement issued by the Meteorology Department, the impact of active winds stirring up dust and sand will continue, reducing horizontal visibility in parts of eight major regions. These regions include Madinah, Tabuk, Al-Jawf, the Northern Borders, and Hail. The impact is not limited to the northern and western sectors but extends to parts of Al-Qassim, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, necessitating caution during road travel.
Chances of thunderstorms and a drop in temperatures
Meanwhile, the chance of thunderstorms and rain, possibly accompanied by strong downdrafts, remains high over parts of the highlands of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah. These highlands are characterized by their mild climate and seasonal rains that moderate the weather. At the same time, the northern parts of the Kingdom are affected by an air mass that will cause a noticeable drop in temperatures, signaling the beginning of cooler nights in those areas.
Maritime navigation conditions in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf
- Red Sea: Forecasts indicate that surface winds will be northwesterly to northerly in the northern and central parts, with speeds ranging from 25 to 45 km/h, potentially reaching 50 km/h in the northernmost part. In the southern part, winds will be westerly to northwesterly at speeds of 10-32 km/h. Wave heights will range from 1 to 2 meters, reaching 2.5 meters in the north, resulting in a moderate to rough sea state.
- Arabian Gulf: Surface winds will be southeasterly to southerly, shifting to northwesterly at night with speeds of 12-38 km/h in the north. In the central and southern parts, winds will be northwesterly to southwesterly, shifting to southeasterly at night. Wave heights will range from half a meter to one and a half meters, with sea conditions remaining slight to moderate.
