Successful transportation of 290,000 pilgrims via the Holy Sites Train – SAR

Saudi Railways (SAR) announced the resounding success of the third phase (Movement C) of the Hajj pilgrimage, during which more than 290,000 pilgrims were successfully and seamlessly transported from Arafat to Muzdalifah via the Holy Sites Train, concluding at 12:30 AM. This achievement underscores the high operational efficiency of the digital and logistical system managed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to facilitate Hajj rituals and provide the utmost comfort and safety for visitors to the Holy Mosque.
The company explained that the total number of pilgrims transported via the Al-Mashaaer Al-Mugaddassah Metro during the first three completed journeys exceeded 604,000 passengers. The fourth journey is scheduled to begin at 1:00 AM and continue until 9:00 AM, with the aim of transporting pilgrims from Muzdalifah to Mina to continue performing their rituals with ease and peace of mind. These efforts are part of a comprehensive operational plan prepared by SAR for the Hajj season, which includes operating more than 2,000 trips aimed at transporting over two million passengers throughout the operating days.

The history of the Holy Sites Train and its pioneering role in serving pilgrims

The Holy Sites Metro is one of the most prominent mega-projects of development and technology implemented by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to serve pilgrims. This vital project was launched in 2010 with the primary objective of alleviating the severe traffic congestion between the holy sites (Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah) and reducing carbon emissions from traditional buses. The metro line stretches for 18 kilometers, connecting nine strategically located stations—three in each of the holy sites—making it a crucial logistical lifeline during the days of Tashreeq and Arafat.

The regional and international impact of the smart transportation system in Hajj

The significance of this massive project extends beyond the local level, serving as an inspiring regional and international model for managing enormous crowds within record timeframes and according to the highest global safety standards. The continued success of Saudi Railways (SAR) in operating the train reflects the Kingdom's exceptional organizational capabilities and reinforces its position as a leader in innovation for managing major religious events and seasons. This technological advancement also aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the quality of services provided to pilgrims and enrich their religious and cultural experience.
