Rutte denies discussing Greenland sovereignty with Trump: Security is our priority

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has put an end to the speculation surrounding his recent talks with US President-elect Donald Trump, categorically denying that the issue of Danish sovereignty over Greenland was discussed. This clarification comes amid growing speculation following Trump's remarks hinting at a "framework" regarding the Arctic island.

In an interview with "Special Report with Bret Baier" on Fox News, Rutte explained that the talks were very constructive, but did not address changing the island's political status. "The issue of Greenland remaining part of Danish territory was not raised in my discussions with President Trump," Rutte said, emphasizing that the focus was entirely on security and strategic matters.

Arctic security and countering rising influence

The NATO Secretary General indicated that what Trump called a "framework" is essentially about strengthening collective security in the Arctic region. Rutte emphasized that there is complete agreement with the US President on the need to ensure the protection of this vast region, especially in light of current geopolitical and climate changes.

Rutte added that Trump's thinking is heavily focused on "what we must do to ensure the protection of this region, where Chinese and Russian activity is increasing." These remarks come at a time when China is seeking to position itself as a "near-Arctic" power to open new trade routes, while Russia continues to bolster its military presence in the far north, making the region a hotspot for international competition.

Historical background: Longstanding American interest

Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland is not new. During his first presidential term in 2019, he sparked a diplomatic row when he openly expressed his desire to buy the island from Denmark, a proposal that was categorically rejected by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who described the idea as “absurd.” While the current tone seems more focused on security cooperation, the history of his statements casts a shadow over any discussion concerning the island.

The strategic importance of Greenland

Greenland is of paramount strategic importance to the United States and NATO, not only because of its vast natural resources of rare minerals, but also because of its vital geographic location. The island is home to Thule Air Base, the northernmost US military base, which plays a pivotal role in the ballistic missile early warning system and space surveillance.

In closing, Rutte confirmed that future negotiations, referred to by NATO spokeswoman Alison Hart, would take place between Denmark, Greenland and the United States, with the primary objective being "to ensure that Russia and China cannot establish an economic or military foothold" that threatens the security of the allies on the northern flank of the Atlantic.
