Robotic colon tumor removal in Mecca

King Abdullah Medical City, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, has recorded a new medical achievement that adds to the record of successes of the health sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as a specialized medical team was able to end the suffering of two patients suffering from tumors in the colon, through a precise surgical intervention using the latest surgical robot technology, within the urgent care pathway system.

Specifically, the medical city received its first patient, a 57-year-old woman, whose detailed examinations and endoscopic diagnosis revealed a mass in her sigmoid colon. The colorectal oncology clinic immediately began conducting the necessary radiological examinations and tests to prepare the patient for a delicate robotic surgical procedure. The operation was a complete success, and the patient was discharged from the hospital just two days later in good health, reflecting the rapid recovery offered by this technology.

In a related case, a second patient, aged 61, was diagnosed with a mass in his right colon. After completing all necessary medical procedures and examinations at the colorectal surgery clinic, the patient underwent robotic tumor resection, which was a resounding success, and the patient was discharged in good health. This highlights the expertise of the medical staff and the advanced techniques employed.

Medical expertise and world-class technologies

This achievement was overseen by a comprehensive medical team led by colorectal surgery consultants Dr. Tariq Al-Subhi, Dr. Parvez, Dr. Shatha, and Dr. Hanin, with the participation of the anesthesia team consisting of Dr. Hisham and Dr. Ahmed Sadaqa, in addition to Dr. Adnan Al-Zanbaqi from the endoscopy department. This integration between the different departments underscores the medical city's commitment to providing comprehensive care that ensures patient safety.

The surgical robot revolution in modern medicine

Robotic surgery represents a significant leap forward in modern medicine, providing surgeons with unparalleled precision and magnified three-dimensional vision. This allows access to delicate and complex areas within the abdominal and pelvic cavities that were previously inaccessible with traditional surgery or even conventional endoscopy. This technique is distinguished by its ability to preserve surrounding tissues and nerves, and to significantly reduce bleeding, thereby minimizing the likelihood of postoperative complications and accelerating the patient's return to normal life.

Keeping pace with the Kingdom's Vision 2030

This achievement aligns with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of the programs under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to facilitate access to healthcare services and improve their quality and efficiency. King Abdullah Medical City continues to invest in the latest medical equipment and artificial intelligence to enhance the Kingdom’s position as a leading destination for advanced healthcare regionally and internationally, ensuring the provision of the best medical services to citizens, residents, and pilgrims in the Holy City of Mecca.
