Riyadh weather today: Heavy rain and weather warnings until the evening

The Saudi capital, Riyadh , and its surrounding areas have experienced significant weather fluctuations since early this morning, including moderate to heavy rainfall. The sky remains overcast, indicating the possibility of continued rain. The National Center for Meteorology advanced warnings regarding the weather conditions, cautioning against reduced horizontal visibility due to dust storms associated with strong winds, and indicating that the chance of rain will persist until 11:00 PM this evening.
Weather details and affected areas
The National Center for Meteorology's report clarified that the weather conditions are not limited to Riyadh city alone, but extend to several governorates and centers within the region. The warnings include the following areas:
- Al-Zulfi, Al-Ghat, and Al-Majma'ah.
- Shaqra, Thadiq, Huraymila, Rumah, Dhurma, and Marat.
- Southern governorates such as Al-Aflaj, As-Sulayyil, and Wadi Ad-Dawasir.
Forecasts indicate that these areas will continue to experience thunderstorms that may lead to flash floods in valleys and ravines, accompanied by hail showers and strong downdrafts that will stir up dust and sand.
Snow forecast and low temperatures
In a notable development in the winter weather, the meteorological report did not rule out snowfall in parts of the Hail and Qassim regions, with the possibility of this extending to the northern parts of the Riyadh region. This coincides with a significant drop in temperatures, with cold to very cold weather prevailing, especially in the northern and northwestern regions of the Kingdom.
climatic context and the impact of weather conditions
These weather fluctuations are occurring within the context of the winter season in Saudi Arabia, which is typically characterized by the passage of low-pressure systems leading to atmospheric instability. While these rains are particularly important for irrigating the soil, supporting vegetation, and replenishing water reserves, they also require extreme caution from citizens and residents.
Such weather conditions typically affect traffic within cities and on highways connecting provinces due to water accumulation or reduced visibility. Therefore, authorities always emphasize the importance of following safety guidelines in these circumstances, staying away from floodplains and valleys, and exercising caution while driving in strong winds and rain.
Weather conditions in the rest of the Kingdom
Regarding the overall weather pattern in Saudi Arabia, the report indicated that light to moderate rain is expected in parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, and Hail regions, as well as in the southwestern highlands. The center also warned of the possibility of fog formation, which could reduce visibility during the early morning and late night hours in parts of these areas, in addition to surface winds that may stir up dust along the coastal regions.
