Inauguration of the intestinal ultrasound clinic in Mecca

King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, has launched its latest medical service: an Intestinal Ultrasound Clinic dedicated to serving patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This medical achievement aligns with the medical city's strategic direction to develop advanced healthcare models based on innovation, enhancing the patient experience, and improving the quality of treatment outcomes in accordance with the latest global practices.
The diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases has evolved, and there is a shift towards non-invasive care
Historically, the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, relied heavily on invasive procedures like endoscopy or radiation-exposing imaging techniques such as CT scans. However, with the rapid advancements in medicine over the past decade, global medical practice has shifted towards adopting more precise and non-invasive diagnostic methods. Intestinal ultrasound represents a significant breakthrough in this field, allowing physicians to assess intestinal wall thickness, blood flow, and inflammation levels immediately, safely, and without radiation, marking a historic shift in the management of chronic gastrointestinal diseases.
The importance of intestinal ultrasound in improving quality of life
The establishment of the intestinal ultrasound clinic of paramount importance both locally and regionally. Locally, this clinic serves a large segment of the population in the Western Region and pilgrims to the Holy Mosque in Mecca, providing them with rapid and highly accurate medical care. Regionally, this initiative reinforces the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's position as a leading country in attracting the rarest and most specialized medical expertise in the Middle East. The great significance of this technology lies in its ability to assess disease activity and monitor treatment response immediately and effectively, without the need for prior preparation or anesthesia. This enhances the efficiency of medical decision-making during the clinical visit and reduces the psychological and physical burden on patients.
Early achievements at the Digestive and Liver Health Center
This specialized service, launched in November 2025, is an extension of the Medical City's efforts at the Advanced Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endoscopy Center. The Medical City explained that the clinic relies on examinations conducted by specialists in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel diseases, ensuring a direct link between imaging results, clinical assessment, and treatment planning. This contributes to expediting the patient's journey and reducing the need for more complex traditional diagnostic procedures. Since its launch, the clinic has received 85 patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, including 50 cases of Crohn's disease and 35 cases of ulcerative colitis, reflecting the significant benefit of this service and its importance in enhancing the efficiency of ongoing follow-up.
Keeping pace with the aspirations of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 in the health sector
The introduction of this advanced technology, currently limited in the Western Region, reflects King Abdullah Medical City's leadership in adopting the latest global practices. The medical city affirms that launching this clinic aligns with its ongoing strategy to enhance clinical excellence, support healthcare transformation initiatives, and elevate the efficiency of specialized services. This approach directly contributes to achieving the objectives of the Quality of Life Program, a key component of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, by providing world-class healthcare that meets aspirations and relies on smart solutions and cutting-edge technologies to ensure a healthy and vibrant society.
