Crescent sighting centers in Riyadh are ready to observe the crescent of Ramadan 1445

The Riyadh Region Municipality announced the completion of all preparations and arrangements at the crescent observation stations in the governorates of Tamir, Shaqra and Al-Hariq, in preparation for the season of sighting the crescent of the holy month of Ramadan, in a step aimed at providing an ideal environment for the Sharia and astronomical observation committees to perform their tasks with high accuracy.
Infrastructure and logistics development
The comprehensive development plan implemented by the Secretariat included improving roads leading to the observation sites to ensure smooth traffic flow and easy access for observers and the public. The work also included maintaining existing facilities, preparing reception areas, equipping parking areas, raising safety and security standards around the observatories, and providing full logistical support to the relevant committees, reflecting the integration among government agencies in serving this religious observance.
Strategic monitoring sites: Tamir, Shaqra, and Al-Hariq
The sites that have been equipped are distinguished by unique geographical and astronomical characteristics that make them among the most important observation points in the Kingdom:
- The Tumair Observatory: One of the most famous observatories in the Kingdom, it was recently inaugurated and upgraded in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Dr. Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, Mayor of Riyadh. The observatory is located in the Sudair region, which is characterized by clear skies and high altitude, facilitating optimal viewing.
- Shaqra Observatory: It is an officially approved site for observing the crescent moon, and it is distinguished by its geographical location which allows a wide field of view of the western horizon.
- Fire Observatory: One of the ancient traditional sites located on the high plateau, which historically relied on naked-eye observation due to its distance from the light pollution of major cities.
Historical context and importance of sighting the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia
The sighting of the crescent moon for the month of Ramadan holds special significance in Saudi Arabia, where the Kingdom employs a method combining traditional naked-eye observation with the use of modern astronomical techniques (telescopes). The Supreme Court calls upon all Muslims and the relevant committees at these observatories to observe the crescent, an event eagerly anticipated annually by the Islamic world to determine the beginning of the holy month.
The geography of the Kingdom, especially the central regions and rocky highlands such as the Tuwaiq Mountains, plays a pivotal role in the success of monitoring operations, as these terrains provide a suitable altitude and distance from humidity and dust that may obstruct visibility.
Impact of development on quality of life
These efforts are not limited to the religious aspect alone, but also align with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to improve the urban landscape and enhance the quality of services provided. Through these projects, the Riyadh Municipality seeks to be a "leading municipality for a prosperous and sustainable Riyadh," affirming its commitment to harnessing all available resources to serve citizens and residents and facilitate the performance of religious rites in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
