Riyadh Municipality prepares observatories in Tamir, Shaqra and Al-Hariq to observe the Ramadan crescent

The Riyadh Municipality announced the completion of all technical and logistical preparations at its moon-sighting sites, as part of its extensive preparations for the holy month of Ramadan. These preparations included upgrading and equipping the astronomical observatories in Tamir, Shaqra, and Al-Hariq to ensure the accuracy of the observation process and provide an ideal working environment for the moon-sighting committees and specialists.
Comprehensive development of infrastructure and facilities
The Secretariat's plan focused on improving the infrastructure leading to the observation sites, with field teams paving and leveling roads to ensure smooth and safe access for observers and visitors. The work also included comprehensive maintenance of service facilities and the preparation of reception areas and parking lots, taking into account safety and accessibility standards, to provide a complete experience befitting this important religious occasion.
In detail, the Tumair Observatory has benefited greatly from development. The site now combines the original observatory, renovated in 1436 AH (2014/2015 CE), with modern facilities designed to serve as a state-of-the-art technological hub utilizing the latest methods for observing the new moon. The Shaqra Observatory, established in 1431 AH (2010/2011 CE), has undergone modernization to ensure its continued high-efficiency operation. Meanwhile, the Al-Hariq site, distinguished by its unique geographical features and situated on a high plateau, has been equipped as a traditional observatory, allowing for naked-eye observation and thus reflecting the integration of traditional observation methods with the precision of modern technologies.
The religious and geographical significance of crescent sighting in Saudi Arabia
The sighting of the crescent moon for the month of Ramadan in Saudi Arabia holds exceptional importance, extending beyond the local level to encompass Islamic and international dimensions. As the cradle of Islam and the birthplace of revelation, the Kingdom serves as the primary reference for many countries and Muslim communities worldwide in determining the beginning of the Islamic months, particularly Ramadan and Dhul-Hijjah.
The Kingdom's methodology relies on combining traditional sightings with the naked eye and the use of modern astronomical technologies (such as telescopes and electronic binoculars), under the supervision of the Supreme Court, which calls upon all Muslims and specialized committees to observe the new moon. The Riyadh Municipality's efforts to equip these observatories support this approach, as these elevated locations, far from light pollution, provide an ideal environment for precise observation.
Integrating efforts to serve the ritual
The Secretariat's efforts are not limited to construction alone, but extend to providing full logistical support to official observation committees and volunteer observers. These observatories serve as scientific and legal platforms that contribute to resolving disputes regarding the sighting of the crescent moon, where testimonies are documented according to strict legal regulations. This governmental attention reflects the Kingdom's commitment to facilitating the performance of religious rites and providing all the necessary resources to ensure the accuracy of the Islamic prayer times for Muslims.
