Medical breakthrough in Riyadh: Single-incision technique ends 15 years of suffering

Imam Abdulrahman Al Faisal Hospital , one of the main components of the First Riyadh Health Cluster has recorded a qualitative medical achievement that adds to the record of successes of the health sector in the Kingdom, after a specialized medical team succeeded in performing a delicate and complex surgical operation to remove part of the colon using advanced endoscopic technology through a “single incision”.
This operation came to put an end to a long and painful ordeal for a patient whose complaints had continued for more than fifteen years, during which she suffered throughout that period from chronic abdominal pain and repeated episodes of intestinal obstruction, which negatively affected her quality of life and her ability to carry out her daily activities normally.
A Saudi medical team leads the achievement
This delicate medical procedure was performed by a highly skilled Saudi surgical team led by Dr. Talal Al-Shehri, with the participation of a select group of specialist surgeons including Dr. Yazid Al-Yousef, Dr. Talal Al-Mukhlifi, and Dr. Munira Al-Qarni. The operation was a complete success without any complications, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in stable condition, with the disappearance of the chronic symptoms that had plagued her for years.
A technological revolution in endoscopic surgery
Single-port laparoscopy represents a significant advancement in general surgery and colorectal surgery. This technique offers several key advantages over traditional surgeries and even multi-port laparoscopy, most notably:
- Significantly reducing post-operative pain due to the limited size of the surgical incision.
- Accelerating the recovery period and return to normal life.
- Reducing the likelihood of future wound infections or surgical hernias.
- Achieving better cosmetic results, where the surgical scar is almost hidden.
A qualitative shift in health services
This achievement comes within the context of the rapid development witnessed by the healthcare sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which aims to localize modern medical technologies and enhance the efficiency of national talent. The success of this process reflects the strategy of the Riyadh Health Cluster I in adopting the latest global practices to provide precise, specialized healthcare.
Such advanced surgeries contribute to reducing the length of time patients stay in hospitals, which raises the operational efficiency of health facilities and allows for serving a larger number of beneficiaries, which is in line with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which focuses on facilitating access to health services and improving their quality.
This success confirms Imam Abdulrahman Al Faisal Hospital’s ongoing commitment to developing its surgical services and providing the safest and most effective treatment solutions for patients, which enhances confidence in the local health system and its ability to deal with complex and chronic cases efficiently and competently.
