Founding Day celebrations in Riyadh: Cultural and heritage events

Riyadh celebrates the historical roots of the Kingdom on its founding day
The Saudi capital, Riyadh, is preparing to celebrate Saudi National Day. The Riyadh Municipality has announced a wide-ranging program of cultural and heritage events to be held at 61 different locations throughout the city and its surrounding governorates. These celebrations aim to embody pride in the deep-rooted history of the Saudi state, strengthen national identity among citizens and residents, and commemorate the founding of the first Saudi state by Imam Muhammad bin Saud in 1727.
Historical background and significance of the founding day
Founding Day is celebrated on February 22nd each year, a date that symbolizes the beginning of Imam Muhammad bin Saud's reign and the establishment of the First Saudi State with its capital in Diriyah. A royal decree issued in 2022 designated this day as an official holiday, making it a national occasion alongside National Day, which falls on September 23rd. Founding Day aims to highlight the Kingdom's deep historical roots spanning three centuries and to showcase the cultural and civilizational heritage that has shaped the identity of the Saudi state since its inception, through the Second Saudi State, and culminating in the unification of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Diverse events reflecting Saudi culture
As part of its efforts to enhance community engagement, the Riyadh Municipality is organizing a program packed with activities suitable for all family members. For the first time this year, events will be held at 12 locations within the newly established municipal offices, expanding the reach of the celebrations to a wider segment of the population. Activities include national performances at the "Foundation Theater," as well as interactive zones that narrate the story of the Kingdom's founding through a comprehensive historical journey, showcasing the sacrifices of the ancestors over three centuries. Various celebratory activities will also take place in public parks and gardens, along with hospitality areas offering Saudi coffee and dates, embodying the authentic hospitality that is an integral part of Saudi identity.
National and international impact of the celebrations
The importance of these celebrations extends beyond the local aspect of strengthening national unity and fostering a sense of belonging; it encompasses broader dimensions. Internationally, these events contribute to presenting an authentic image of the Kingdom's rich history and highlighting its cultural wealth as part of the Vision 2030 objectives aimed at promoting cultural tourism. These occasions also serve to build bridges of cultural exchange with the world and correct stereotypes by showcasing the story of the Saudi state throughout history. Celebrating the Founding Day reinforces the Kingdom's position as a key historical player in the region and affirms the state's continuity and its ability to build a prosperous future based on its rich past.
