Date production in Riyadh: Half a million tons to support food security

The National Center for Palms and Dates announced that the Riyadh region contributes about 457,000 tons of dates annually, which represents a huge boost to the agricultural sector and enhances the food security system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, especially as this announcement coincides with the holy month of Ramadan, in which dates are the “queen of the table” and an indispensable element for those fasting.

Historical and cultural importance of dates

Dates hold a special place in Saudi and Islamic heritage. They are not merely a fruit, but a symbol of generosity and hospitality, and an integral part of cultural identity. The date palm has been linked to the history of the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years, serving as a primary source of food and energy. During Ramadan, dates acquire particular religious significance, as Muslims follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by breaking their fast with dates and water. This is due to their health benefits in preparing the stomach to receive food after long hours of fasting, and providing the body with immediate energy thanks to their richness in natural sugars, minerals, and vitamins.

Riyadh: A strategic center for date production

Official statistics confirm that the Riyadh region alone is home to over 8 million date palms, distributed across more than 21,000 farms, making it one of the world's most important date-producing centers. This massive production is not limited to quantity but also encompasses quality and diversity, with the Kingdom boasting over 400 varieties of high-quality dates. This agricultural infrastructure is supported by advanced processing capabilities, with Riyadh housing more than 60 specialized factories producing 49 distinct varieties, most notably popular types such as Khudri, Sagai, Khalaas, and Barhi, which enjoy widespread demand in both local and international markets.

Economic and international impact in line with Vision 2030

This massive production plays a pivotal role in achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify national income sources and boost non-oil exports. The date palm and date sector contributes directly to supporting the gross domestic product (GDP) and providing thousands of job opportunities for citizens in agriculture, manufacturing, and marketing. Internationally, the Kingdom has established itself as the world's largest exporter of dates, with its influence extending beyond trade to include humanitarian and diplomatic initiatives such as the "Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' Gift of Dates." Through this program, the finest dates are distributed to Muslims in dozens of countries worldwide during Ramadan, reinforcing the Kingdom's position as a leader in the Islamic world and a key supporter of global food security.
