Saudi Arabia's rural areas support rainfed crops with modern equipment in 4 regions

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the agricultural sector in Saudi Arabia, the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Program, "Reef Saudi," announced a significant support package for rainfed crop farmers, consisting of the delivery of 729 modern agricultural machines and equipment. This step marks a milestone in the transition from traditional to modern, technology-based agriculture.

Well-planned geographical distribution and technical support

The distribution targeted farmers in four key regions characterized by their unique geography and climate: Makkah, Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan. The operational package included 200 specialized tillage machines, in addition to 529 technical attachments for the machines, specifically designed to suit the mountainous terrain and agricultural terraces for which these regions are known. This facilitates farmers' ability to work with the rugged land and increases the cultivated area.

The strategic importance of rainfed crops

This initiative derives its paramount importance from the nature of rain-fed crops, which rely primarily on rainfall, making them a cornerstone of the Kingdom's water and food security strategy. The southern and southwestern regions of the Kingdom possess a historical advantage in this type of agriculture, with the terraced fields of the Sarawat Mountains representing a cultural and economic legacy spanning centuries. The Saudi Countryside Initiative supports the revitalization of this heritage using modern tools, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources and minimizing groundwater depletion.

Training and human capacity building

The program's official spokesperson, Majid Al-Buraikan, emphasized that the project is not limited to the physical supply of equipment, but rather adopts a holistic approach focused on the human element. The program includes intensive training courses for beneficiaries to ensure the safe and optimal operation of the equipment. Field technical teams work alongside farmers to provide guidance and support, and to measure performance indicators, contributing to reduced waste and increased operational efficiency.

Economic impact and the goals of Vision 2030

This support aligns directly with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economic base and support rural communities. By reducing the operational costs that burdened small farmers and improving production quality through modern mechanization, the program contributes to improving the income of rural families, curbing migration to cities, and strengthening value chains for local products such as coffee, fruit, and grains, thereby enhancing national food security and opening new horizons for Saudi products in local and regional markets.
