Red Sea International avoids 118,000 tons of emissions in 2024

(RSIThe Red Sea International), developer of one of the world’s most ambitious and sustainable tourism projects, has announced an unprecedented environmental and historical milestone in its 2024 sustainability record. The company has officially avoided releasing approximately 117,879 tons of harmful carbon emissions. This exceptional achievement has been officially documented and certified by the global independent verification body, DNV, further solidifying Saudi Arabia’s leadership in adopting clean energy solutions and low-carbon operations.
The Red Sea International Company's environmental vision and its comparison with the traditional impact
To illustrate the scale of this enormous environmental impact, avoiding this massive amount of emissions is equivalent to taking approximately 27,500 conventional cars off the roads for a full year, or eliminating the electricity consumption of roughly 24,500 residential homes. This success is a direct result of the destination's complete reliance on renewable energy sources, 100% of which is renewable, completely abandoning traditional power grids and fossil fuels in powering its luxury facilities.
From idea to reality: The historical journey of the largest sustainability project
The Red Sea International Company was established as a key component of the Saudi Public Investment Fund's mega-projects, in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 launched in 2016. From its inception, the goal was not simply to build a luxury tourist destination, but to redefine the concept of sustainable tourism globally. The project stretches along the Kingdom's west coast, encompassing an archipelago of over 90 pristine islands, as well as stunning mountains and deserts. The company has set its sights on achieving a 30% increase in biodiversity by 2040 through pioneering initiatives such as planting millions of mangrove trees and protecting rare coral reefs.
Dimensions of the local and international impact of zero neutrality plans
The impact of this achievement extends beyond the Kingdom's borders, serving as an inspiring model regionally and internationally. Locally, the project directly supports the "Saudi Green" initiative and contributes to accelerating the achievement of net-zero emissions by 2060. Regionally, it sets a new standard for real estate and tourism development in the Middle East, demonstrating the possibility of combining luxury with complete environmental sustainability. Internationally, the success of Red Sea International proves to the global tourism sector that a complete transition to renewable energy is not only feasible but also economically and environmentally viable.
Smart infrastructure based on clean energy and sustainable transportation
Raed Albasit, the company’s Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer, explained that this achievement demonstrates the powerful impact of integrating sustainability standards into operational processes from day one. The destination currently relies on more than 760,000 solar panels to generate clean electricity, supported by the world’s largest battery storage facility to ensure a continuous power supply around the clock. In terms of transportation, the company operates a state-of-the-art fleet of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles and buses, supported by a smart charging network comprising 150 renewable energy-powered stations. The Red Sea International Airport has also taken pioneering steps to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Low Carbon Fuel (LCAF) for its seaplane operations, paving the way for its full implementation across commercial flights.
