The Red Crescent in Mecca is prepared to deal with the rainy weather

The Saudi Red Crescent Authority announced a state of maximum alert, confirming its readiness in Mecca to deal with the heavy rainfall affecting the region. This proactive measure coincides with official warnings issued by the National Center for Meteorology regarding forecasts of heavy thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds. All available human and logistical resources have been mobilized to ensure the provision of emergency medical care as quickly as possible.

The region's climate and history of dealing with weather changes

The Makkah region and its surrounding governorates are characterized by a unique geography and climate that make them susceptible to severe weather fluctuations during certain seasons. Historically, the region has experienced heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods in valleys and ravines. Saudi government agencies, particularly ambulance and civil defense teams, have consistently been at the forefront of developing crisis and natural disaster management plans. This ongoing development of emergency infrastructure reflects the Kingdom's commitment to Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the quality of life and ensure the highest standards of public safety for citizens, residents, and visitors to the Holy Mosque.

Strategic dimensions of raising the readiness of the Red Crescent in Mecca

The preparedness of the Red Crescent in Mecca is of paramount importance, extending beyond the local level to encompass regional and international dimensions, given Mecca's status as a destination for millions of Muslims from around the world. Locally, this preparedness contributes to minimizing human and material losses and protecting lives. Regionally and internationally, it sends a reassuring message, affirming the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ability to manage crowds and respond to climate-related emergencies with high efficiency and professionalism, thus enhancing the Kingdom's reputation in crisis management and emergency healthcare.

Field deployment plan for ambulance teams

The authority explained that it has activated comprehensive preparedness plans across all emergency services sectors. Coordination has been enhanced at the Command, Control, and Medical Dispatch Center to monitor the evolving weather conditions in real time. This measure aims to direct field teams according to the highest operational standards to ensure rapid response to affected areas. Furthermore, ambulance teams have been reinforced at critical support locations within the most affected governorates, particularly near wadis, highways, traffic congestion points, and rugged terrain.

Statistics and capabilities of the ambulance sectors in the region

To ensure comprehensive coverage, the authority indicated that the Makkah region includes 19 ambulance sectors supported by 98 ambulance centers operating around the clock. These centers are strategically distributed, including 24 centers in Taif across four sectors, 36 centers in Jeddah across seven sectors, and 38 centers in the Holy City of Makkah across eight sectors. These centers are supported by field support and deployment points covering all governorates affected by the weather conditions, according to carefully planned operational strategies.

Safety guidelines and emergency communication methods

In light of these weather conditions, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority issued an urgent appeal to citizens and residents to adhere to the instructions and warnings of the relevant authorities. It emphasized the importance of avoiding flood channels and water accumulations, and staying away from accident sites to facilitate the work of ambulance crews. The Authority also called on everyone to cooperate by giving way to ambulances. In emergencies, ambulance services can be requested by calling the toll-free number (997) or through the “Is’afni” (Rescue Me) smartphone application, which allows for highly accurate geolocation of the caller, thus contributing to the rapid arrival of field teams and the provision of timely care.
