Snow in Riyadh and Qassim: Meteorology warns of a rare frost wave

In a significant development regarding the weather conditions in Saudi Arabia, the official spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein Al-Qahtani, confirmed that the country has entered an unusually early and severe winter weather pattern. In a press statement to Al-Youm newspaper, Al-Qahtani revealed that the area expected to receive snowfall has expanded beyond the usual northern regions, extending to include the Qassim region and the northern parts of the Riyadh region, in an exceptional weather event that warrants attention.

Weather details and frost wave

The official spokesperson explained that forecasts indicate a sharp and noticeable drop in temperatures, with lows expected to reach as low as -2 degrees Celsius in some affected areas. He noted that the center is closely monitoring the movement of air masses and the spread of the weather system, which began to show signs over the highlands of Tabuk and Hail, gradually moving towards the heart of the Kingdom. He described the arrival of snow in Qassim and the northern part of the capital as a rare event compared to past years' climate records, giving this winter season a unique character.

Climate context and changes in weather patterns

These forecasts are particularly significant given the Kingdom's geographical and climatic characteristics. While residents of northern border regions like Tarif, Qurayyat, and the Tabuk highlands are accustomed to seasonal snowfall, the deep penetration of these polar waves into central regions such as Qassim and northern Riyadh is a rare occurrence. This expansion reflects a shift in atmospheric dynamics and climatic patterns affecting the Arabian Peninsula, making this year's winter distinct and requiring special preparations from both service providers and citizens to cope with the extremely low temperatures.

Official warnings and the importance of preventative awareness

Al-Qahtani warned of a severe frost wave accompanying this weather system, stressing the need to take all necessary precautions, especially in open areas and highlands that will be directly affected by the cold air mass. The National Center of Meteorology urged all citizens and residents not to be misled by rumors or inaccurate information circulating on social media, and to rely exclusively on official sources. It also encouraged everyone to use the "Anwaa" app and follow the early warning system to receive accurate, real-time updates on the weather system's path, ensuring safe planning for daily activities and avoiding risks.

Safety guidelines for winter lovers

Given the great enthusiasm Saudi society has for winter weather and camping trips to the desert (kashtat) when it rains or snows, Al-Qahtani strongly urged those wishing to enjoy this winter weather to strictly adhere to the safety instructions issued by the Civil Defense and relevant authorities. This includes choosing appropriate times and locations for camping, avoiding areas prone to flash floods or those with reduced visibility due to fog or snow. He also stressed the importance of exercising caution when using traditional heating methods (charcoal and firewood) indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, ensuring a safe passage through this cold spell.
