Ramadan Nights in Al-Lith 2024: Supporting the local economy and a family destination

In a unique Ramadan atmosphere blending spirituality and community engagement, the Al-Lith Governorate Municipality launched the fourth annual “Al-Lith Ramadan Nights” market, in the presence of the Governor of Al-Lith, Imran bin Hassan Al-Zahrani. This annual event has become a landmark on the governorate's cultural and social calendar, underscoring its vital role in stimulating economic activity and supporting local talent.
Historical background and general context
Al-Lith Governorate, located on the Red Sea coast within the Makkah region, holds strategic and historical importance. It is not only a vital port but also serves as the Miqat (designated point for pilgrims to enter the state of Ihram) for those coming from the south. During the holy month of Ramadan, Saudi Arabian cities transform into bustling hubs of activity, reflecting both authentic traditions and modern development trends. Seasonal markets like "Layali Al-Lith" represent a modern evolution of traditional souks (market stalls), organized to provide an attractive and safe environment that combines shopping, entertainment, and culture, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to improve quality of life and enhance community engagement.
Supporting the local economy and empowering the community
During the opening ceremony, the governor launched the “Saudi Arabia Goodness Market 2026” initiative, which aims directly to support and empower street vendors and productive families. This initiative provides them with an organized platform to showcase their products, ranging from traditional Ramadan foods and handicrafts to local agricultural produce. By providing more than 40 dedicated stalls for productive families and the non-profit sector within a total market area of 20,000 square meters, the event contributes to creating temporary job opportunities, stimulating entrepreneurship, and injecting liquidity into the local economy. This initiative also addresses the phenomenon of informal street vending, thus improving the urban landscape and ensuring the safety of the products offered.
The importance of the event and its expected impact
The impact of the “Al-Lith Ramadan Nights” extends beyond the economic sphere, encompassing profound social and cultural dimensions. The Mayor of Al-Lith, Abdullah Al-Zubaidi, explained that the market has become a daily destination for families and visitors from within and outside the province, where they enjoy spending time in an inviting social environment. The events include a diverse range of cultural and sporting activities, a Ramadan riddles stage, and entertainment programs specifically designed for children to develop their skills. The market also fosters community partnerships, such as the “Empowerment and Giving” initiative with the Orphans Association and the “Beginning of Goodness Project” with the Al-Birr Charitable Society, thus reinforcing the values of social solidarity and highlighting the complementary role of the public and non-profit sectors in achieving sustainable development.
At the regional level, the Al-Lith market offers a successful model that other governorates can emulate in organizing events that support local economies and preserve cultural heritage. With the growing interest in domestic tourism, such events can position Al-Lith as a promising tourist destination during Ramadan, especially given its proximity to Mecca and Jeddah.
