Rainfall amounts in Saudi Arabia: Mecca records the highest rate

Several regions across Saudi Arabia experienced widespread rainfall, affecting most administrative areas. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture released details of the rainfall amounts recorded over the past 24 hours. This announcement is part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts in precise hydrological and climatological monitoring to track water resources and weather patterns impacting the Kingdom.
Mecca records the highest rainfall rate
According to the Ministry's daily report, the Makkah region topped the list of areas with the highest rainfall, with the Al-Gharif monitoring station in Al-Khurmah Governorate recording the highest rainfall in the Kingdom at 32.6 mm . This amount is considered a positive indicator for bolstering the water reserves in the region, which is known for its valleys and dams. In other locations in the Makkah region, Al-Ruknah in Al-Muwayh recorded 8.0 mm, Maysan 1.7 mm, and Haddad Bani Malik in Taif 0.5 mm.
Rainfall details in Medina and Riyadh
The rainfall was not limited to Mecca, but also extended to the Medina region, which recorded varying amounts. In Tharb, in the Mahd Al-Dhahab governorate, 11.6 mm of rain fell, while in Al-Hasu municipality in Al-Hanakiya, 2.2 mm. In the capital, Riyadh, stations recorded rainfall in several locations, most notably the Saja Al-Fara'a Reserve in Afif, which recorded 8.6 mm, King Khalid International Airport with 5.0 mm, Al-Majma'ah with 3.4 mm, and Al-Kharj and Halban in Al-Quway'iyah, both recording 1.6 mm.
Eastern Province, Qassim and the North
The report indicated that the Eastern Province also experienced scattered rainfall, with Ras Tanura recording 3.4 mm, Hafr Al-Batin 2.9 mm, and the Jubail Naval Base 2.8 mm. In the Qassim region, the Ministry's branch in Al-Nabhania recorded 6.2 mm, and Al-Tarfiya Al-Gharbiya 3.9 mm. Rain also extended to the Hail region, which recorded 1.0 mm in Baqaa, and the Northern Borders region, which recorded 0.8 mm at Rafha Airport.
The importance of water and environmental monitoring
These reports are of paramount importance to the Kingdom's water security, as the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture relies on a vast network of 51 hydrological and climatological monitoring stations to provide accurate data. This rainfall contributes to replenishing shallow groundwater aquifers and raising water levels in dams, thus supporting vegetation cover and natural pastures, which aligns with the objectives of the "Saudi Green" initiative to promote environmental sustainability.
