The latest queen bee breeding techniques in Asir, in partnership with the United Nations

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture branch in the Asir region launched a specialized workshop in Mahayil Asir Governorate, highlighting the latest methods for queen bee rearing. The workshop saw wide international participation and was attended by more than 100 beekeepers. This pioneering event aims to enhance local production efficiency and improve national bee breeds, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to developing the agricultural sector and supporting farmers and beekeepers with global best practices.
Historical roots of an ancient profession in the picturesque nature of Asir
With its diverse mountainous terrain and lush vegetation, the Asir region is one of the most important natural honey-producing areas in the Arabian Peninsula. Beekeeping has been practiced by the region's inhabitants for centuries, passed down through generations, utilizing the diverse local flowers and trees such as jujube, acacia, and tamarisk. This deep historical legacy makes the development of this craft a pressing necessity for preserving the region's agricultural identity and transforming it from a traditional practice into a professional industry that contributes to the national economy and meets the growing demand for authentic, natural honey.
The latest queen bee breeding technologies through strategic partnerships
The ministry branch explained that the event was organized through fruitful strategic cooperation with the Saudi Countryside Development Program, the Khamis Mushait Municipality, and the Beekeepers Association, in addition to an international technical partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The workshop aimed to provide advanced scientific and practical content on modern methods of queen bee rearing, ensuring increased productivity within apiaries. The agenda included a review of bee swarm propagation techniques, improving the genetic traits of local strains, professional hive management mechanisms, and an introduction to the most prominent diseases threatening bees and methods of prevention to limit their spread.
Economic dimensions and far-reaching impact towards achieving Vision 2030
The impact of these initiatives extends beyond the local level to encompass regional and international dimensions. By adopting global standards, the Kingdom seeks to enhance the quality and productivity of its national honey to compete strongly in foreign markets. The Director General of the Ministry's branch in the region, Engineer Mohammed Al-Ateef, affirmed that these programs aim to develop the beekeeping sector and promote sustainable agricultural practices. He pointed out that these steps align with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 regarding the development of the agricultural sector, raising product quality, and supporting the food security system. Empowering beekeepers and equipping them with knowledge contributes to creating new job opportunities and supporting the rural economy, which positively impacts the gross domestic product.
For their part, the participants showed great enthusiasm for the innovative practical aspects presented during the workshop, noting its pivotal role in transferring expertise and refining their skills according to the latest scientific practices. The Ministry concluded by emphasizing the continuation of its guidance programs to provide various support tools, striving to solidify the Kingdom's leading position in the production of high-quality honey and ensure the sustainability of this natural resource for future generations.
