The mosque was founded in the first year of the Hijra (migration), and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the first to lay its foundation stone upon his arrival in Medina after migrating from Mecca. He personally participated in its construction along with his noble companions, making it the first mosque built in Islam.
The virtues of Quba Mosque are mentioned in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions). It is believed that the verse, “A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy of your standing in prayer,” was revealed concerning it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said, “Whoever purifies himself in his house and then goes to Quba Mosque and prays there will have the reward of performing Umrah.” This great virtue has made the mosque a primary destination for the residents of Medina and its visitors, including pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah, throughout the ages.
Details of the largest expansion project in the history of the mosque
The King Salman Project to Expand Quba Mosque aims to increase its capacity to an unprecedented level to accommodate the steady rise in the number of worshippers and visitors. The mosque's total area will be increased approximately tenfold, from 5,035 square meters to 50,000 square meters, thereby increasing its capacity to 66,000 worshippers.
The project not only expands the mosque building but also includes a comprehensive development of the surrounding area. The plan encompasses the restoration and development of 57 adjacent historical sites, including wells, farms, and orchards that were part of the area's historical fabric during the Prophet's era. The project will also connect the mosque to three Prophetic routes, enriching the visitor's religious and cultural experience and allowing them to walk in the footsteps of the Prophet and his companions.
