Qatif Family Marathon: Promoting Health and Inclusion for People with Disabilities

In a move reflecting the government's commitment to enhancing quality of life, the Qatif Governorate Municipality, in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Sports , organized a unique community sporting event: a family walking marathon held along the Al-Muhaysiniyat Corniche . The event, themed "Our Steps Today... Their Future Tomorrow," targeted all segments of society to promote healthy lifestyles.
National context for enhancing quality of life
This initiative aligns perfectly with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Quality of Life Program, which aims to increase physical activity in society and transform it from a mere recreational activity into a daily and sustainable lifestyle. Open community events like this marathon are a cornerstone of the strategy to combat chronic diseases resulting from a sedentary lifestyle, such as obesity and diabetes. Medical studies indicate that walking is one of the most effective and suitable preventative measures for all ages.
Broad and inclusive community participation
The marathon witnessed a large turnout, reflecting the awareness of the governorate's residents. The total attendance at the venue reached approximately 350 people, of whom 297 actually participated in completing the designated course amidst an enthusiastic atmosphere. The event was not limited to able-bodied individuals; it also presented a remarkable model of social inclusion with the participation of 15 people with disabilities , who demonstrated through their determination that disability is not a barrier to practicing sports and actively participating in national events.
The role of volunteering and health services
To ensure the event's success, 70 volunteers were deployed efficiently along the Corniche, reflecting the growing culture of volunteerism among Saudi youth and their pivotal role in the success of public events. On the health front, the site was transformed into a mini medical clinic thanks to the participation of Qatif Central Hospital, which provided stations for measuring vital signs and offering immediate medical consultations to attendees, adding a preventative and educational dimension to the event.
Investing in future generations
The organizing committee did not overlook the importance of instilling healthy values in children, so a dedicated "Children's Corner" was created, featuring physical games and educational activities designed in an entertaining way. This approach aims to build a generation aware of the importance of physical health from a young age, which will contribute in the future to reducing the health burden on society and creating a more active and vibrant environment, in support of the "Qatif Healthy City" initiative.
