Saudi Arabia launches the third outlet of the Makkah Route Initiative in Pakistan

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia inaugurated today the third gateway to the Makkah Route Initiative in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, specifically in the city of Lahore. The initiative's terminal was established at Allama Iqbal International Airport, reflecting the wise leadership's commitment to facilitating the journey of pilgrims and streamlining their procedures. The inauguration was attended by His Excellency Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Pakistani Minister of Religious Affairs; His Excellency Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Maliki, Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Pakistan; and Major General Dr. Saleh bin Saad Al-Murabba, Director General of Passports, underscoring the depth of bilateral relations and joint cooperation between the two brotherly nations.
The roots of Saudi care for the pilgrims
Since the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the leadership has placed serving pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah at the forefront of its priorities, and the services provided to these guests of God have witnessed continuous development over the decades. Within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, the Hajj and Umrah Initiative emerged as one of the most prominent programs serving pilgrims, launching for the first time in 1438 AH (2017 CE). This strategic step aims to bring about a qualitative shift in the pilgrim's experience, moving from traditional procedures to integrated digital and logistical pathways that begin in the pilgrim's home country and end at their place of residence in the Kingdom. Since its launch, the initiative has successfully served more than 1,254,994 pilgrims, reflecting the scale of the achievement and the Kingdom's exceptional organizational capabilities.
How does the Makkah Route Initiative facilitate the Hajj journey?
The initiative aims to provide high-quality services to pilgrims from participating countries traveling to the Kingdom. This includes receiving them and facilitating their entry procedures in their home countries with ease, starting with issuing Hajj visas electronically and collecting biometric data, and continuing with the General Directorate of Passports' procedures for completing entry into the Kingdom at the departure airport after verifying compliance with health requirements.
In addition, luggage is coded and sorted according to the transportation and accommodation arrangements in the Kingdom, and they are transferred directly to buses to take them to their places of residence in the Makkah and Madinah regions, via dedicated routes, while the partner agencies take care of delivering their luggage to them, which removes from the pilgrim the trouble of waiting in Saudi airports and saves his time and effort to devote himself to worship.
Strategic dimensions and regional and international impacts
The Kingdom's expansion in opening new entry points carries profound implications that extend far beyond simply streamlining procedures. Domestically, in Pakistan, this new entry point in Lahore alleviates pressure on other airports and provides Pakistani pilgrims with greater peace of mind and physical comfort before commencing their Hajj rituals. Regionally and internationally, the success of this initiative reinforces the Kingdom's position as a global leader in crowd management and the application of advanced technology to serve humanity, setting an exemplary international model for cross-border cooperation in facilitating the movement of travelers.
Governmental integration to ensure the success of the Hajj system
The Ministry of Interior is implementing the initiative for the eighth year in close collaboration with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media, as well as the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, and the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA). Also collaborating are the General Authority for Endowments, the Guests of God Service Program, and the General Directorate of Passports, in conjunction with the digital partner (stc Group). This institutional synergy ensures the provision of exceptional service befitting the Kingdom's stature and the pilgrims arriving from all corners of the earth.
