The Supreme Court calls for the sighting of the crescent moon of Ramadan 1447 on Tuesday evening

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia issued an important statement calling upon all Muslims throughout the Kingdom to look for the crescent moon of Ramadan for the year 1447 AH, on the evening of Tuesday, the 29th of Sha'ban, corresponding to February 17, 2026. This announcement is based on the noble Prophetic tradition and the established practices in the Kingdom for determining the beginning of lunar months, especially those associated with major religious observances.
Details of the Supreme Court statement
The court clarified in its statement that, in accordance with its previous decision No. (203H) dated 29 Rajab 1447 AH, which established that Tuesday, 1 Sha'ban 1447 AH (corresponding to January 20, 2026 CE), was the first day of Sha'ban, next Tuesday will be the 29th of Sha'ban, the day designated for sighting the new moon. Therefore, the court requests all Muslims to attempt to sight the new moon, either with the naked eye or using approved astronomical telescopes.
Reporting and Certification Mechanism
The Supreme Court called upon anyone who sights the crescent moon, whether with the naked eye or through binoculars, to immediately go to the nearest court to register and officially document their testimony. It also indicated that the nearest government center could be contacted to assist the sighter in reaching the relevant court, thus facilitating the process for citizens and residents and ensuring the accuracy of the crescent moon sighting.
The importance of sighting the moon and specialized committees
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia places great importance on the process of observing the new moon. Official committees are formed in several regions and at well-known astronomical observatories, such as those in Sudair and Tamir. These committees, comprised of astronomers and religious scholars, are dedicated to accurately sighting the crescent. This process combines traditional methods of sighting the new moon with astronomical calculations, which the committees use to determine its visibility. The court has urged those capable of observing the new moon to join these committees and seek reward and blessings, as this constitutes cooperation in righteousness and piety and benefits all Muslims in determining the start of Ramadan.
religious and social context
The sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon is an annual event eagerly awaited by the Muslim world, as Muslims unite in their fasting and prayers. If the crescent moon is not sighted on Tuesday evening, the month of Sha'ban will be completed as a 30-day month, with Thursday marking the first day of Ramadan. However, if the crescent is sighted, Wednesday will be the first day of the holy month. These meticulous procedures underscore the Kingdom's commitment to the Prophetic tradition, "Fast when you see it (the crescent moon) and break your fast when you see it," and to ensuring the unity of the Muslim community in observing this great religious duty.
