Traffic authorities: Unauthorized vehicles are prohibited from entering the holy sites

The General Directorate of Traffic in Saudi Arabia announced details of its operational plan for this year's Hajj season. The official spokesperson for the Traffic Department, Colonel Mansour Al-Shakra, confirmed the readiness of the Hajj security forces for traffic management. The plan includes strict measures, most notably prohibiting unauthorized vehicles from entering the holy sites, starting at midnight on the fifth day of Dhul-Hijjah. This decision is being implemented in coordination with various security and service sectors to ensure the highest levels of traffic flow and safety for the pilgrims.
The evolution of traffic crowd management in the history of Hajj
Historically, Mecca and the Holy Sites have witnessed tremendous development in crowd management and traffic flow. In past decades, the ever-increasing number of pilgrims posed a significant challenge for authorities in ensuring their safe movement between Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. Over time, Saudi Arabia has invested billions of riyals in developing infrastructure, constructing advanced road networks, modern tunnels and bridges, and the Al-Mashaaer Metro. This historical development has necessitated precise regulations, such as prohibiting the entry of unauthorized vehicles, to ensure no traffic congestion impedes the movement of official buses and emergency vehicles, reflecting the Kingdom's ongoing commitment to utilizing all available resources to serve the pilgrims.
Comprehensive field deployment to secure the pilgrims
Colonel Al-Shakra explained that the Hajj traffic security forces operate in strategic partnership with various government and private sectors. A full field deployment has been implemented across all main roads and axes, the tunnel network within Mecca, the central area, and the holy sites. These plans are being implemented according to precise timelines that correspond to crowd movement. The relevant authorities began implementing operational plans early in preparation for the Hajj season, culminating in the enforcement of the comprehensive ban on vehicles and motorcycles violating traffic regulations.
The positive impact of traffic management at both the local and international levels
The meticulous traffic management during the Hajj season is of paramount importance and has a far-reaching impact. Locally, this management contributes to protecting infrastructure and reducing carbon emissions within the holy sites, thus providing a healthy and safe environment. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's success in managing millions of pilgrims within a limited geographical area and a short timeframe reinforces its leading global position in crowd and crisis management. The implementation of stringent measures sends a reassuring message to the entire Muslim world, emphasizing that the safety of pilgrims is a non-negotiable priority.
Stages of escalation and exodus during the days of Hajj
The official spokesperson indicated that the traffic measures primarily aim to maintain smooth traffic flow and enable pilgrims to move around safely. These plans will continue sequentially throughout the Day of Tarwiyah (the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah), followed by the ascent to Mount Arafat on the morning of the ninth. After sunset on the ninth, the movement from Arafat to Muzdalifah will commence, followed by the pilgrims' transfer to Mina to complete the stoning ritual during the days of Tashreeq. All these operational phases are implemented according to a comprehensive system that ensures the comfort of the pilgrims at every step of their spiritual journey.
