Meteorology: Cold wave and frost hit 5 Saudi regions

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an important weather alert for the coming days, revealing that large parts of the Kingdom will be affected by a cold air mass with significant impacts. According to the report, the direct effects of this air mass will begin on Wednesday and Thursday, covering a wide geographical area including Al-Jawf, the Northern Borders, Hail, and Al-Qassim regions, extending to the capital, Riyadh. This is expected to bring sharp weather fluctuations and a rapid drop in temperatures.
The center's explanatory data indicates that this upcoming wave will push temperatures to unprecedented lows not seen in these regions for some time, with forecasts predicting minimum temperatures ranging from 3 degrees Celsius to as low as -1 degree Celsius. This sharp drop increases the likelihood of frost formation, particularly in open and desert areas, necessitating extreme caution.
In the context of the climate, these cold waves are part of the Kingdom's geographical pattern during winter, as the northern and central regions are typically affected by polar air masses originating from northern Arabia. The Kingdom's desert landscape plays a significant role in accelerating the cooling process during the night, as the ground loses heat rapidly once the sun sets, resulting in a large and noticeable temperature difference between day and night—a characteristic feature of winter in Najd and the north.
Regarding the anticipated effects and significance of this event, the drop in temperatures below zero carries repercussions that extend beyond simply feeling cold; it directly impacts the daily lives of citizens and residents. In such conditions, the need for various heating methods increases, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of using coal and firewood indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. This cold wave also has a potential impact on the agricultural sector, particularly in the Qassim and Hail regions, considered the Kingdom's breadbasket, where frost could negatively affect exposed crops if farmers do not take the necessary preventative measures.
The National Center of Meteorology concluded its report by emphasizing the importance of citizens and residents following weather reports and real-time updates to alerts issued through its official channels and verified digital platforms. This warning aims to ensure access to accurate and up-to-date information on weather developments and to avoid being misled by rumors or inaccurate information that may circulate on social media. The center stressed the importance of adhering to the instructions of the relevant authorities to ensure everyone's safety.
