The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an advanced weather alert for the Riyadh region tomorrow, warning of strong winds stirring up dust and sand, which will significantly reduce horizontal visibility. The center explained that this weather condition will begin at 8:00 AM and continue until 6:00 PM.
According to the alert, the list of affected areas includes the capital, Riyadh, in addition to a large number of governorates and centers affiliated with it, namely: Diriyah, Thadiq, Huraymila, Rumah, Dhurma, Marat, Al-Hariq, Al-Dilam, Al-Muzahmiya, Hawtat Bani Tamim, Al-Dawadmi, Al-Rayn, Al-Quway'iyah, Afif, Al-Aflaj, Al-Sulayyil, Wadi Al-Dawasir, Al-Zulfi, Al-Ghat, Al-Majma'ah, and Shaqra.
The climatic context of dust storms in Saudi Arabia
These weather phenomena are an integral part of the climatic characteristics of the Arabian Peninsula, which is distinguished by its vast desert landscape, where the Rub' al Khali and Nafud deserts cover extensive areas. Dust and sandstorms are a frequent occurrence in the Kingdom, with their frequency increasing particularly during the transitional periods between seasons, such as spring and the beginning of summer. The primary cause of these storms is the activity of surface winds, most notably the seasonal northerly winds that blow from the north and northwest. These winds carry enormous quantities of dust and sand from open areas and transport them over long distances, directly impacting major cities and populated areas such as Riyadh.
Expected impacts and the importance of early warnings
These dust storms have far-reaching effects on various aspects of life. From a health perspective , the dust poses a risk to public health, especially for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies, as well as the elderly and children. Therefore, health authorities emphasize the need for these groups to stay indoors and avoid going out except when absolutely necessary, while also stressing the importance of wearing protective masks. Regarding transportation , reduced horizontal visibility increases the risk of traffic accidents on highways and local roads, and may also cause delays or cancellations of some flights at King Khalid International Airport. This highlights the vital role of the National Center of Meteorology in issuing early and accurate warnings. This information allows relevant government agencies, such as Civil Defense and traffic departments, to take precautionary measures, and enables individuals and economic sectors to prepare in advance to mitigate potential damage and risks.
