The Meteorology Department conducts a monitoring exercise (exercise 11) in preparation for Ramadan, with the participation of 25 entities

As part of proactive efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims and citizens, the National Center for Meteorology, headquartered in Jeddah, conducted Exercise “Rasad 11,” a significant strategic step to enhance coordination and preparedness for the holy month of Ramadan. The exercise saw broad participation, with 47 representatives from 25 relevant government agencies in the Makkah and Madinah regions.
Strengthening the early warning and crisis management system
This exercise culminates a series of preparatory workshops recently held by the center to test and activate its detailed emergency plan for the 1447 AH Ramadan season. These exercises are of paramount importance in crowd management, as the accuracy and speed of meteorological information are crucial for protecting lives and property, especially in densely populated areas such as the Holy Sites and the central area of Medina.
Through these initiatives, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia seeks to enhance the infrastructure for the safety of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah, with meteorological monitoring playing a pivotal role in supporting decision-making by security and service agencies. Integration between the National Center of Meteorology and other government entities is a cornerstone for ensuring a swift and effective response to any emergency weather phenomena that might disrupt the tranquility and spiritual atmosphere during the holy month.
Reality simulation using the latest virtual reality technologies
The “Monitoring 11” exercise was distinguished by its reliance on advanced simulation technologies within a virtual environment that accurately replicated realistic scenarios of impactful and potential weather events. The exercise focused on testing multiple hypotheses, including heavy rainfall, strong surface winds, and sudden temperature fluctuations, to measure the responsiveness of communication channels and the efficiency of information flow between the center and relevant stakeholders.
The exercise highlighted technical and human preparedness, with a focus on ensuring timely delivery of reports and early warnings. These technologies are part of the significant development underway in the Kingdom's meteorological sector, aimed at reducing natural hazards and enhancing operational planning for religious and tourist seasons.
Recommendations to ensure a safe season
The exercise concluded with a number of strategic recommendations, most notably the emphasis on the need for regular testing of alternative communication channels to ensure their uninterrupted operation under any circumstances. Participants also stressed the importance of continuing such exercises to maintain the highest levels of preparedness, thereby fulfilling the aspirations of the wise leadership to provide a safe and accessible environment for visitors to the Two Holy Mosques, and reflecting the commitment of government agencies to integrated and collaborative work.
