The Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority arrested 160 suspects in May

The Saudi Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) announced that it initiated a number of criminal and administrative cases during May, as part of its ongoing efforts to uphold the values of integrity and transparency and combat illicit enrichment. The Authority explained that it conducted thousands of inspection tours and investigations, resulting in the arrest of 160 citizens and residents involved in crimes affecting public integrity, including bribery and abuse of official positions. Some of those arrested were released on bail after the completion of legal procedures.
The efforts of the Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority in protecting national integrity
These intensified efforts by the Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) part of a comprehensive national strategy whose outlines began to take clear shape with the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. Historically, the Kingdom has witnessed a radical transformation in its oversight and accountability mechanisms, with the consolidation of regulatory bodies and the expansion of Nazaha's powers to include pursuing violations in all governmental and private sectors without exception. This structural transformation reflects a firm political will that considers combating corruption a fundamental pillar for building a strong and sustainable economy and protecting public funds from waste and squandering.
Details of preemptive strikes in the holy sites and service ministries
During May, the Authority intensified its field operations to an unprecedented degree, conducting 2,365 general inspection tours and 480 detailed investigations. In conjunction with preparations for religious seasons, the Authority carried out 14,989 intensive inspection tours in the Holy Sites to ensure the safety of services provided to pilgrims and to guarantee they were free from any administrative or financial irregularities that could affect the quality of the Hajj and Umrah sector.
The investigations and arrests included employees and affiliates of vital government agencies, most notably:
- Ministry of Municipalities and Housing.
- Ministry of Education.
- Ministry of Health.
- Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance.
- Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority.
The charges against those arrested varied between offering and accepting bribes, and exploiting official influence to achieve personal interests at the expense of the public interest, which harms the government work environment and disrupts the development process.
Local and international dimensions of enhancing transparency in Saudi Arabia
The expected impact of these strict campaigns goes beyond simply punishing violators; at the local level, these measures contribute to raising the efficiency of government work, improving the quality of services provided to citizens and residents, in addition to creating a fair competitive environment based on efficiency, merit and equal opportunities.
At the regional and international levels, the Kingdom's commitment to combating corruption enhances its position as a safe and attractive investment destination for foreign capital. This rigorous approach also contributes to raising Saudi Arabia's ranking in global transparency and anti-corruption indices, confirming its commitment to international standards of good governance and contributing to building strong and sustainable international economic partnerships.
