Najran dates in Ramadan: “Al-Bayadh” and “Al-Mawakil” are symbols of generosity and abundance

Dates: A staple of the Ramadan table in Saudi Arabia
With the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, tables in Saudi Arabia take on a special character, with dates emerging as an essential and indispensable element, following a noble Prophetic tradition and embodying inherited customs of generosity and hospitality. At the heart of this Ramadan scene, the Najran region shines with its unique date production, most notably the "Bayadh" and "Mawakil" varieties, which have gained widespread popularity among consumers for their high quality, nutritional value, and symbolic significance.
Historical background and cultural significance
Date palm cultivation is deeply intertwined with the history of the Arabian Peninsula, where the palm tree has been a source of food, shade, and shelter for thousands of years. Dates hold a prominent place in Islamic heritage, mentioned in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions), thus imbuing them with a spiritual dimension in addition to their nutritional value. In Najran, renowned for its fertile lands and abundant water since ancient times, date palm cultivation has formed an integral part of the region's economic and social identity. Varieties such as "Al-Bayadh" and "Al-Mawakil" are the product of this agricultural expertise passed down through generations, becoming a source of pride for the region's inhabitants.
“Al-Bayadh” and “Al-Mawakil”: Najran’s distinctive flavors
Each variety of Najran dates boasts unique characteristics that make it a favorite among discerning palates. "Al-Bayadh" dates, with their light color and distinctive sweetness, are not only a breakfast fruit but also a key ingredient in many traditional Ramadan dishes and desserts. "Al-Mawakil" dates, on the other hand, are known for their soft texture and rich flavor, making them the perfect choice for breaking the fast and offering to guests as a symbol of Najran's warm hospitality. During Ramadan, the historic date market in the Aba Al-Saud neighborhood of Najran experiences a surge in activity, as locals and visitors alike make sure to purchase these varieties to include in their daily iftar meals.
Its economic and nutritional importance and its role in Vision 2030
The importance of Najran dates extends beyond their cultural significance, serving as a vital economic resource for local farmers. According to statements from the Agricultural Committee of the Najran Chamber of Commerce, the region boasts over 500,000 date palms producing more than 40,000 tons of dates annually, spread across an area exceeding 2,696 hectares. This abundant production, which includes varieties such as "Ruthana Najran," "Shishi," and "Barhi," reinforces the region's position as a major agricultural center in the Kingdom. This activity aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to achieve food security, diversify income sources, and increase the percentage of non-oil exports. The date palm cultivation sector receives support and attention from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to ensure its sustainability, maintain the quality of the local product, and enhance its competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
